Any disadvantage converting D750 NEF files to DNG format?

I gave in to severe GAS and got a Nikon D750 yesterday and then was surprised to learn that PSE 12 does not recognize the NEF file format from the D750. What's up with that anyway?

Without upgrading to PSE 13, which I have no desire to do, Adobe has a free program to convert NEF files to DNG format that is recognized by PSE 12. Easy install, does a whole directory at a time and only takes about 1 to 2 seconds to convert each file.

Am I losing anything by converting to DNG format or is it as good as working with the NEF files?

Just as good :-)

I started converting to DNG a year or so ago, with zero adverse effects.
It is just an open source raw format that any and all can use.

Kinda surprised that PSE doesn't support it yet, I thought they were on top of that :-/

Thanks, GT. That's what I was hoping to hear. :D

PSE 13 does support the new NEF format, PSE 12 does not.

You can also use Nikon's View NX2 to convert to dng or tiff.

That's another strange thing. I was using ViewNX2 2.7.3 32-bit for downloads. I checked for updates and it said there are no newer versions. All new Nikons ship with a CD, so I tried it anyway, and it's 2.10.1 64-bit!

Thanks, Bill. I'll check that out. After a quick look I'm not sure it will support the D750 files yet. "Supported Digital Cameras: Nikon digital SLR cameras beginning with the D1 (released in 1999) to the D5500 (released in February 2015), as well as the D7200."

I say anytime you go from one proprietary program(nikon) to another(DNG) there are going to be some changes, however small or big.
DNG was NOT created by a joint powers committee to be a universal standard like JPEG, even though open and gaining more widespread use, DNG is an Adobe development.
I convert DNG to use LR, but will NEVER get rid of a Raw file to which I attach any value.
Wait till Adobe starts to charge for it as a part of some cloud.
Then it will be you and Adobe, till death do you part!!

I'm also trying to avoid the cloud. :|

The Adobe DNG converter creates a duplicate file with a .dng extension, so the original RAW file is still intact.

Could it be that Oregon is not in the same time zone as anybody else?

I did have an update waiting when i got home tonight. I have the Nikon thing that scrolls messages across the upper right corner of my desktop telling me of updates.

The only disadvantage comes in the amount of time it takes to convert. For a short time I had to wait until Adobe came out with a new version of lightroom offering support for my camera.

If you have large RAW files and a good number of them, be prepared to wait. Some argue that there are differences but I perceive them to be virtually unnoticeable.
