Question about lens length

If you have a 1200mm lens at 50x and a 1200mm lens at 60x would one have a longer reach or just be brighter.
Reason wondering if a FZ70 would give a longer reach than the SX50 I have now. Tried goggleing the question ...no luck. Would appreciate any answer that someone can come up with. Also would the shots be less noisy with the 60x camera. Thanks

1200mm is 1200mm. I do not know what the 50X and 60X are unless they are claiming 50X the regular or normal focal length of 50mm. In that case the 1200mm lens would be a 24X.

I am assuming you are talking about 35mm equivalent focal lengths. If the lens is 1200mm at 50X, that means it is 1/50 of that focal length at 1X or 24mm Equivalent. At 60X it would be equivalent to a 1440mm lens on a 35mm full frame camera. the 60X would have a longer reach, just 1.2 times longer (60/50).

Noise has nothing to do with focal length or zoom setting. It is a function of the sensor size and image processor in the camera. Most super zooms in this range use a 1/2.3 inch sensor. The sensor size is just about the same as an 8mm movie frame. Here is a link to a very good discussion of sensor size.

Hope this helps just a little. Perhaps someone else will join the discussion and provide further information.

A 1200mm lens is a 1200mm lens is a 1200mm lens - the 'x' relates the wide angle to the telephoto angles of view of a zoom lens. A 24mm ~ 1200mm would be a 50x zoom and a 20mm ~ 1200mm would be a 60x zoom.

Then, it gets complicated comparing the 2 cameras and possible different angles of view. The same focal length lens on 2 different size sensors would be different, but the magnification of the same object at the same distance would be the same with both cameras.

A 50x zoom means that the maximum focal length is 50 times that of its shortest focal length. 60x is also just a ratio of max to min focal lengths. In order to know which 1200mm equivalent lens would give a larger image/longer reach (actually just a narrower field of view) you would also need to know the size of the sensor in each camera.
Noise will be sensor related, not lens related. And when it comes to sensor noise, size is not the only determinant.

I am not sure either maybe its a multiplier...Sony has a setting in the menu that has a 100x multiplier shows it in the evf as you zoom out. Thanks

It means that one of the cameras has a slightly smaller sensor than the other to achieve the same angle of view as a 1200 lens! ;-)

the sensor size on both cameras is 1/2.3 inch....small I know but its what is affordable now. I guess my question opens it up to a potfull of varibles. Thanks

The difference between those 2 cameras is that the 50X zoom means 24-1200 and the 60X zoom means 20-1200 mm.

In any case you may be aware that the long end of the lens of the SX50 is not actually 1200mm. That is only the 35mm equivalent angle of view based on the small sensor in the camera. In other words the results will be a image which will resemble one from a real 1200mm lens on a camera with a 35mm sensor. The crop factor is 5.62 so the actual focal length at the long end is 215.5mm

I guess the old pencil is not as sharp as it used to be...I kind of put all the kind replies in a pot and ok a 1200mm is a 1200mm either at 50x or 60x but the difference is on the low end 20mm vs 24mm.

In the case of your SX50 the actual focal range is 4.27mm - 213.5 mm

Get away from the numerical analysis and start shooting affordable pictures. The SX50 has demonstrated itself time and time again on this forum for being one of the best lower cost cameras.

totally agree....I hike and shoot everyday. My forte is sports and nature. The SX50 has been great but every camera that I have purchased I have done perhaps too much reading about and always come up with a question or 2 that I need help with an answer to especially before I purchase it. I needed to know if a FZ70 with a 60x would give me more reach than my SX50 or since the P600 has dropped in price to $199 (refurbished) would be the answer. I know the Panasonic would be faster focus which I need but the P600 would give me more reach. Time to take a walk step back and the answer thanks to you gentlemen will come.
