Hello,
I am looking at getting one of the bridge cameras for the superzoom capabilities. I am very interested in the new Nikon P900 with the 83x zoom! But I am wondering if anybody who has it can tell me about the image quality compaired to the Canon SX60 or any of the others that are 50x or more.
Has anybody done a comparison shoot out with compared pictures of the same subject and settings?
Looking forward to any replies.
They are both great little cameras...but the sx60 shoots in raw...and that is what my wife prefers...
Both cameras at full optical zoom are going to require a tripod.
She can shoot a d7100 with a tamron 150-600 hand held but cannot get a decent pic handheld with the sx 60...when the lens is way out.
Realize this doesn't really answer you question...but the more info the better.
Folks on Flickr are posting lots of P900 images. It's to new so not many images are here on UHH. Looks like it has a very sharp lens with little chromatic aberration. And the zoom beats all brands hands down.

This really hasn't been mentioned before but the Nikon p900 sports a 67MM lens as opposed to the SX60's 52mm lens. It will let in a LOT more light. I have owned the Canon SX60 and have gifted it to my daughter. I will own the Nikon p900 later this fall when the price has come down. In effect, it will become my long-shooter for capturing birds. Like some others on UHH I am very interested in comments from the new p900 users as to how the vibration reduction works at the far end of the focal range.
It may not be an issue for you, but I found the feel and shape of the Canon SX50 very different from one of the Nikon bridge cameras. You might want to handle them both, if you have a store that stocks.
Thank you for the replies! :-) I appreciate it. I have never shot in RAW so far. I wonder how much difference it makes?
Thanks for the flickr link James. That is helpful!
I wish I could handle them both in a store but I can't find any stores that carry it except online.
I'm very interested in the Nikon P900 and would like to know if the lens is threaded for a filter? If not how do you protect it? Thanks All in advance!
I have had the Canon and now have the Nikon P610 which is close to the 900. I prefer the Nikon, it handles better and has a better interface, It does not shoot Raw which does not bother me and there is no place for an external flash. I like the picture quality of the Nikon but there's not much in it.
I think I was the first on this forum, to own the Nikon P900, although I havent really had a chance to really get to use it, because of the cold weather and snow, we had here in the northeast, here are some sample shots, that I did, with the P900..P.S....the lens on the camera is 2.8-5.6 which no one menchioned...The 3rd shot, I did at about 3/4 zoom, hand held, truly this camera is awesome, especially for you bird shooters, out there, can you Imagine, the Eagle shots, you can get??
I"m going to take, my P900 with me, on my upcoming cruise vacation, in July, I"m looking forward to the shots, i will get, stay tuned....

The lens is not threaded to take filters or hoods - I asked this same question of the the shop where I got mine and was told that what look like threads on the lens are simply concentric rings - hope this helps ?

Technically correct but completely irrelevant. The neither the diameter of the front element nor the TOTAL amount of light which pass through the element are critical. What is important is the effective aperture of the lens, which determines the INTENSITY of the light striking the sensor, which is what is critical. Both Nikon p900's 67MM lens and the SX60's 52mm lens will have exactly the same light intensity transmission at the same aperture so in that respect they are equal. However the P900 lens has a max aperture of f/2.8 vs the SX60's f/3.4, so in that respect the advantage goes to the P900.
As Nikon sells filters for the P900 one can only assume that it IS threaded to take one

This really hasn't been mentioned before but the N... (

Without ever having seen either camera, does the 900 have a faster lens?
How big the opening is has nothing to do with how much light it gathers. It's not how much goes in, it's how much goes out through the back.
Does it have the same size sensor? That would be a way to get more magnification without a longer lens.
That it's 15mm bigger, does that make it bigger and bulkier? A 67filter would cost more than a 52 .
At 52mm the canon would share filters with the common 50mm 1.4 and others.
Just saying. ;-)
