Own both D3100 and D90 and both have quick remove doors....they are designed to pop off and I can't recall where, but there is a slot on the battery grips to store the door when off for grip use. Not a design flaw, rather a design feature worth it...well thought out.

I have been a Nikon Camera user most of my professional life and I would never use anything else. I have a Nikon film camera going on 25 years old and it works perfectly.
I recently invested in a Nikon 3200 for a vacation camera. I bought two and returned both. I am not slamming Nikon because like I said I have been very happy with the cameras.
The 3200's however in my opinion were not close to Nikon quality. I had lens focusing problems with one 3200 and the other the battery door literally fell off. Has anyone else had similar issues with Nikon. I have noticed Nikon is having some of their camera's made in Thailand...What happened to the superior quality of Japan.

Hmmm... Now you have me thinking. I shoot with the 5100 and it seams darn near indestructible. I have a relative who has a 3200 after changing over from Cannon. She complained of it's quality many times and has ultimately returned it.

I was very surprised do to the way that she drooled over my 5100. I Just assumed that she couldn't get used to changing brands. Maybe she had legitimate complaints and I did what I do with my wife. (didn't listen).

Nikon designs the camera and lenses and machines and procedures that manufacture them. Whether they're made in Japan or on the moon, it's still a Japanese product.

Jerry, I hate to disagree with you, but...
Until I retired, I worked for a large US electronics firm that makes everything from phones to networking equipment for government agencies. We used both captive factories and contract manufacturers. Most of our gear was designed in the USA. However, there was a difference in the quality level that came from our two Mexican factories vs. our Taiwan or Chinese factories. And when we used Chinese contract manufacturers (including the one Apple favors) we had to install our own quality personnel in order to meet our quality targets. There is a difference in cultural approach to quality in each region of the world which can show itself in the end user experience.

I have personally witnessed a device fail electrical test on a Chinese production line. The second failure of the same test on the same unit brought the supervisor to the test station. Several more attempts were made with similar failing results. Finally yet another attempt with no change to the circuit produced a green light and smiles all around. If the visiting team from the US hadn't intervened, that unit would have joined all the other units passed to the next workstation. Needless to say, retraining was required.

So, to say that all Nikons (or Canons, Pentaxes, Sonys, etc.) are Japanese products is stretching things a bit. They may all be designed in Japan, but the product is defined by both its design and manufacturing locations.

I, too, have been using Nikon since about 1969. Would not consider anything else. I got into the digital market with a Nikon 3200 and then a 3300. I have had NO problems with either camera or the lenses. I converted the 3200 to infrared only, and I've just upgraded to a Nikon Df. This camera I love.
I love being able to use all my older lenses.

So, I would guess you simply got a bad one...a lemon....a tosser. But, in rereading, you said 2. Very strange. I've had no problem with my 3200. So, I really have no idea what to say.

Did they come from the same dealer at the same time? Sometimes a small shift in a production line will affect several units before the line is corrected. If both cameras came from the same run, then it's not surprising they both have a problem.
