I'm about to make a choice between upgrading from a d700 to a d750 or d810. Upon comparing the two, I find a lot of similarities between the two as far a quality of pictures. The d810 megapixels can be down graded to about 26mps and still shoot raw. Does that mean the camera takes a picture of a smaller area or does is it use alternating portions of the sensor or how it done. Also by selecting the 26mps does that increase the frame rate to match the d750? I also read that the d750 is slightly better in low light. By selecting the 26mps setting does that allow the d810 to perform in low light as well as the d750? Please no answers like go to a store and try it out for yourself. You can't ask the store to turn their light down and I'm not going to rent two cameras for the weekend. Thanks leon

If it's anything like the 7100 ,what it does is it crops the image in camera. When you change you should see a box that defines your shot.

If that's the solution, I should have thought of it. Makes perfect sense. A lot like putting a dx lens on a full frame camera.

I think it's more like turning it info a DX camera.
With my D800, at times I wish I had the choice of retaining the full frame with fewer pixels. Still love what that camera can do.

Hi Goofy. I can really understand that. My wife shoots the D800 and there seems to be something special about a lot of her shots. I am looking forward to getting a d750 or the d810, but I am trying to chose the one that best serves me. Wish I could afford to buy both.

Newfie, why don't youcome up to your old home this summer and we'll do a week of shooting. Thinking of going around the second week of Aug. and probably use Bonavista as the home base.Going to do the off harbors and it should be a good year for growlers. I'm afraid the wife will be doing the tourist thingfs alone if she can't talk our daughter to come along.
As I told her Newfoundland,2 cameras with lens ,afraaid you wont be seeing me too often. Oh yeah ,can't forget the Screech

If you do come to NS,make sure you check out the south shore, from Yarmouth up along the shore.Lots of neat little harbors and inlets if you look for them.

ON the 810 you have a choice of 3 raw size files in addition to 1.2X and DX.

1. Lossless compressed reduces the files size 20-40%
2. Compressed reduces the size 35-55%
3. Uncompressed is full size.

They are still full frame and not DX.

JPEG sizes can be set for large, medium and small for FX,
1.2X, DX (1.5X) and 5:4 (30x24). 12 files size are possible for JPEG.

When the D800 was introduced, I wasn't tempted, not even when it became the D810. I stayed with other Nikons, ones using SD cards. Now I have a D7100 and a D750, which replaced my D610. Look at comparisons, and I think you'll choose the D750 over the D810.

Thanks Jerry. Read the first two before taking off for the day's events. It is a very hard decision to make. I can only have one. (today) In time as they depreciate I will probably pick up both. Or I win the lottery. I'm pretty much leaning toward the 810 for its attention to detail. Not that I'm going to do many posters, but it just the kind of pictures I like. The only negative I've found besides price for the 810 is that it records the slowest for action sports, but then I can record in DX mode and speed that up if necessary. Its also not any bigger than my 700 and the controls are about the same. It does irk me to spend more money on a camera than on my last car before repairs.

That what I have been doing so far. However the d810 is now available as a referb at near the price of a new 750. I don't know how long I am willing to wait. I guess the money is burning a whole in my pocket. How long do you think it will be before the referbs are available. Leon

I've never been a big fan of waiting. I bought the D610 and the D750 new.
