Wow, such detailed and knowledgeable insight to my problem. Thanks!

I haven't got the time just now, have to catch a bus. But on the the Adobe website, are two lists, one list that tells you what version of ACR is compatible with the program version you use, and what version of ACR you need for your camera.
If you can't make those two match, the only things left to do are to use a DNG converter, upgrade your program or upgrade your camera.

Thanks for the feedback, but so far I haven't discovered a whole lot of significant difference between the old PS CS5 and the new PS CC now that I've loaded in the DNG update to CS5, though I admit that I've got more to learn of the new system, but hell, I'm still learning new methods of manipulating the old CS5 that most would never know about. As far as the most commonly used areas though there doesn't seem to be a major change. If you can point any out that are significant I'd certainly appreciate the feedback for comparison testing. Thanks, Jack.

That's just silly. Read your User License Agreement. You own nothing either way. Subscription is just a far more efficient method to distribute and support software. With everyone current, their job is easier. Without needing to make pretty boxes filled with DVDs and accompanying paperwork, and pay to inventory them, and pay to transport them to regional distribution points, then pay to provide them to resellers, etc. The benefits are quite clear to the end user as well - better, more up to date software. CC has been upgraded three times and updated five times since it's initial release. This is way better than the old 18 month cycle. And you don't have to pay for the upgrades. You just have to pay $10/mo, or 120/yr or $.33/day.

Yes, a big welcome to the world of subscription software - it's about time!!! :)

Yes there's some nice improvements in there, guess I'll be going beyond the trial period, by then I'm sure they'll have me hooked! Thanks, Jack.

Read the agreement from Adobe you agreed to when you installed CS5 the first time, you don't own it, it is licensed to your use.

Yep, pretty much ALL software is rented that way... it may be a single payment or a monthly payment, but it is never "owned" in the true sense of the word.

I went rather reluctantly from my "owned" copy of CS5 to the CC $9.99 @ mo. plan, but I have not regretted it. The ease of use is the big factor - no more wrangling with out of date raw converters or disparities between Photoshop and Lightroom 5. everything plays well together and also with my plugins.

I find the monthly "rental" fee more palatable than the enormous one-time cost of a purchase every 2-3 years. I am retired now so big lump-sum purchases are harder to swallow than they once were, and Adobe does not have those nice discounts for retired folk like I used to get as a working educator.

You can also purchase Capture One Pro from Phase One. It is an excellent raw converter. I think it is better than PS and more straight forward as well. I'm a 30yr professional and it's what I and almost all of my colleagues use. They offer free updates as new cameras come out. You can get a 45 day trial at their sight and they have great video tutorials. I still go to PS for masking and effects, but rarely much else..
