How do I update PS CS5 to accept RAW files from the Canon EOS 7D MK ll? Can't get a straight answer out of adobe, they just want to sell a new program that you pay into forever and never own!

Sounds to me like they are giving you a very straight answer but you aren't listening.

You are running outdated software that in order to upgrade you need a new version of Photoshop, or get the Adobe DNG Converter for your raw files and convert them to a DNG that your Photoshop can read and deal with.

Who are you talking to that doesn't give you a straight answer. Every day or so, I log on to one of the Adobe sponsored forums and see nothing but straight answers!

As stated, Adobe gives you for FREE a program that stays current and converts your Canon Raw to Adobe Raw. It does it quickly and easily. They don't sell it. It makes every version of PS accept raw files. It costs nothing to try it. I didn't forget to write FREE did I?

If you want to OWN software, you can't. From anybody. They don't do it that way. You can, for a fee, agree to a licensing agreement. Lightroom can be licensed or rented (paid into forever). Photoshop Elements can be "licensed" for as low as $50 when you find it on sale.

FWIW, 4 million people like the rental plan. It apparently offers them convenience for a variety of things, including getting new cameras.

Your EOS camera also came with a software disk for Digital Photo Professional that will process your Canon RAW (CR2) images to JPEG or TIFF (and other formats) that requires no additional purchase.

Thanks, I already looked at that system, but would like to be able to continue using my PS CS5 that I'm familiar with and have already paid for. It seems to give you much more control over your images. I'll admit that I'm no computer guru so I'm probably missing something while trying to get it to accept the dng update. Like I said the people on the phone at Adobe are more than willing to lead you through the process to sell you an update such as PS cc but leave you hanging when trying to install the update that I need. It seems to be a rather convoluted process, but I'll wade through it eventually. Thanks for the friendly heads up though.

:D With that confession, I will try to help! :D

You can't update CS5 with anything that will accept raw files from your camera. It may be ethical or not, but you can't.

It appears that you are confusing the process of updating CS5 with a new version of Adobe Camera Raw, or "ACR" with running a separate, stand alone program that will convert them to something useful to you. You can't update CS5 anymore.

Installing ACR and using DNG Converter as a separate program are different things. DNG Converter will not "install in" our "update" CS5. It will make files that are perfectly usable in CS5 our of your camera's files.

You can for free CONVERT the RAW files from the camera format to a universal, public domain format called Digital Negative, or "DNG". The program to do that is called Adobe DNG Converter.

Think of the DNG Converter as a copy program. Use it to "copy" the files from your 7D MK ll or it's memory card to your computer. If the files are already on your computer, you can still make copies in the DNG format.

One way to look at it is that you have to use something to move the files to your computer. What ever it is, substitute DNG Converter for that process.

There are only two things important about the DNG format here. One is that nothing is lost in terms of image quality. The other is that CS5 will open the new ****.DNG files just like you expect.

I don't know how you store or backup you image files. You can backup the "old" camera files or the "new" DNG files. You don't need to keep the "old" 7D MK II files if you are trying to save space.

If you are a fan of YouTube tutorials, this one works. It is a few years old, so it will reference version numbers that are out of date. Watch this and it should make sense: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bqGovpuihw

I think the link for getting the DNG Converter was provided, but if not: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5864

Photoshop CC is the update. By your own admission of not being a computer guru, I believe one thing many folks find difficult to accept is that regardless of the software title, and what that software does, it will always require an update at some point in time. Graphics software is one example, and it probably requires updates more frequently, as that industry is in a constant state of flux.

$10/month is a small price to pay to keep current (i.e. never need an update). I spend more than that every time I stop at McDonald's. Plus, you'll find the menus of CC2014 to be very nearly identical to your CS5, so you won't have to re-learn stuff. Plus, you'll find really useful new tools on some of those menus that you'll wonder how you've lived without.

Plus, what you paid for CS5 will provide the new software for 5 years, regularly updated at no extra cost, and give you Lightroom as a prize, which is also kept updated at no extra cost.

Lots of pluses there.

Thanks for the updated info. I finally stumbled my way through the process, still have some fine tuning to do but I'll "get er done." There were a lot of procedures that I hadn't done in a while and I'm always very careful when it comes to altering anything on my computer. I'm looking at upgrading to PS CC but need to take a closer look to see if I really find that its that much of an improvement. Take care, and thanks again, Jack.

Thanks for the info. Just out of curiosity, what parts of the PS CC do you find to be a major improvement? I'd be interested to go in and take a look to compare. PS still amazes me as I've been around long enough to have been very involved in the old darkroom technology of days gone by. Things that would take hours to fine tune and accomplish in a darkroom can now be done in minutes, not to mention doing away with all the nasty chemicals and problems associated with them. Thanks again for the input and take care, Jack.

Simple. You stop using 10 yr old software with your camera and subscribe to PSCC/LR for $10/mo
