One note (that I hate) is you can not have View NX-2 and NX-I on the same machine together, it is one or the other.

Do you mean View NX-1? If so, I DID have both on my machine. 1st version came with my D5000, 2nd version came with my D7100. I corrupted my raw files from the D7100 when I downloaded them using View NX-1 instead of 2. I have since purchased a card reader & load them into the computer this way now...much faster, too. I also have Capture NX-2, Capture NX-D, PSE 13, Picasso 3, Adobe Creative Cloud, & a few others.

I would still like to have an NEF file to try myself. Color should be something that can be manipulated.

You may have a NEF file if you PM me with your email address as stated before. The file is too big to upload here and I'll have to share it via a Dropbox link.

From Adobe forum on D7200 NEF support:

Not until the next release of ACR, DNG converter or LR, whichever comes first.

Thanks Bruce. This worked. I had to download latest Capture NX-D to make it work, but I can now convert NEF files to tiff or jpg for the time being.

Of note from my minor experimentation with your raw file:
- dcraw has no problem extracting the 6000x4000 JPG preview contained in the raw file.
- when I "faked" the file header to read 'D5200', 'D7100' (or any reasonable substitute), Lightroom would also correctly display the JPG preview in 'Import' dialogs, but once imported, the same colorspace shift evident in ACR appeared in the LR version - after LR took a while to think about it.
- Mac OS can display the file icons correctly on any variant, but 'Preview' (Mac's built-in image viewer) cannot open ANY version of the file except the extracted JPG.

(...all probably not that surprising, I suppose, but an interesting exercise anyway.)

Best of all, this prompted me to install the latest Capture NX-D also, and it seems mighty powerful for freeware - very Lightroom-ish. I am using some of its functions on a whole bunch of non-Nikon image files right now... ;) Thanks!

That's interesting. I also notice that now on their website they have it printed in red to only use view NX-2 with the newer cameras.

New camera, no time yet for code writers to update. Use the disk that came with the camera to load the company's RAW converter and then work with them. When LR5 upgrades or you go to LR6 you can then delete the converter.

Canon software won't help with a new Nikon D7200.

pretty much true, but "Camera Raw" is Adobe Camera Raw (adobe as in photoshop).

some of the canon utilities will work with other camera brands (not raw processing tools that I am aware of though)

Here's how I got it to work.
1. Install adobe 8.8 dng converter. Make shortcut to desktop.
2. Install (30 day free trial) of UltraEdit.
3. Open NEF with ultra edit and change 7200 to 5500 and save.
4. Drop NEF file on converter and convert.
5. Import DNG in Lightroom
