Portrait photo / oil painting source......

My mother-in-law had portraits done of all her children and grand-kids by a local artist who took photographs, had large prints made and then then used oil paints on the photograph to create a final image that had the appearance of a very realistic oil painting. (think Norman Rockwell not Picasso) My wife wants to get portraits done of our two granddaughters in the same style. I asked her about using photo portraits modified with a paint program and done as a canvas print but she seems pretty set on trying to find someone to do the print / paint thing...... Nation's Lab offers this service but I have had issues with the way they responded to problems with a order before and we are talking about a substantial out lay of funds. Has anyone had experience with an outfit that offers a service of this sort?

Can't help with source. I used to do this as a hobby. Thought it was probably a lost art by now.

This kind of thing? http://www.portrait-painting.com/oil-painting-reproduction.php

I think there are a number of these with asian painters. Have been tempted to try myself.

In 2002 there was a photographer named Sorenson who who made his rounds up and down west coast with appearances at the various Nordstroms stores. We had our daughter's portrait done. Not cheap as I recall, but a fantastic piece that will be passed down. I think this is him:

This type of effect can be easily accomplished in Photoshop these days. While I've never done it, a quick google showed how easy it is to do.

I think he was aware of the obvious "effects" but was looking for an actual oil painting.

But adding to your list:

My wife had the same oil painting process done by a painter here in the Atlanta area when our son was young. Our son is now 18 years old and 6'-4" tall. The painting captured a time in his life that was sweet and precious. OK, he's still sweet and precious - just not as small! Unfortunately, the artist has since passed away.

A decent portrait painter can paint the portrait without the photo. They will use photos to assist them in trying to get a three dimensional look on a two dimensional surface, but painting on the photo is not really how a professional artist would operate. Look on Craigslist under "artists" for people who do this service.

Back in the good old days we used to apply transparent oil paint to sepia-toned photographs. Is that what you are thinking of?

That's what I was thinking of when i posted my answer, but I think the OP may have been thinking of something else.

That is not exactly true...some painters cannot paint from "mind's eye" and can do beautiful work. Some painters cannot paint "from example" and do beautiful work. It depends on the artist.

My sister is one of the former...down to the exact detail. And she does very well.

You're talking about "hand tinting" then I think. It wasn't done with oils necessarily.
