The contract went to Lockheed. Grumman had a long history on Long Island, At one time they were the largest employer on the island. In fact Long Island was a pioneer in the aviation industry. Republic was in Huntington, Roosevelt field and Mitchell Field were on the island as well. The F14-Tomcat was made in Calverton also on the island, The 14 was a Grumman aircraft. I grew up 3 blocks from La Guardia, used to hang out there. Those were the days before airport security. We were regulars at the TWA hanger.

Yeah , I'm 5 miles west of Newark International... I here ya..... Before the days of tight security we would go down to the end of Runway 29 and take pictures of the jets getting ready to take off . Port Newark was another good place for photographs, the ships and all the railroads. That's all off limits now.
Yeah Long Island and Newark have a long history of aviation firsts , but in many history books these milestones are recorded as just taking place in New York.
I used to fly out of Somerset County and took a few hops over to Long Island and Westchester County now and then. I don't fly as much now because it has gotten to be a bit of a rich mans sport. My photography hobby dips into my wallet plenty, and every month the bills pour in ! lol

Well someone's declared themselves the all knowing one here because he lives close to an airport......I live smack bang between Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and TIA in Tucson so I guess I can talk too ! 8-)

I remember the build-Off offered by the armed forces to participants when they wanted a replacement for the British built Harrier Jump Jet......the F35 is what came out of that competition ......it is a special use aircraft being a vertical takeoff craft and cannot be expected to compete with a front-line fighter such as the f22 which was far ahead of it's time at the time and is said to be too much too soon for a war that did not happen !
Now people say(some anyway!) that the latest Russian fighter,
the Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter is a real Bad-Ass machine that outclasses the F22 in some of it's performance features........but as we know, we the US, are so far ahead of everybody else in weapons systems that this is a moot point!!
Add to that the overwhelming superior training in the US armed forces (air) together with the superior Numbers in aircraft overall that if push came to shove ......we would still wipe out any adversary on this planet!
Now if ET came along .....that is a whole new subject !

The JSF was not designed for a dogfight. It was designed as a stand off fighter so as to use missiles to destroy enemy jets while still far enough away to avoid close air combet. It was designed without a gun. End of story.

Wrong. The F35 was designed to have a gun AND it was always planned to add the gun later when the development bugs are worked out. Research Air Force Magazine; there was an article about this subject. Also keep in mind, the F35 is AT LEAST as good a dog-fighter as the F16 if not better.

Are you referring to me as the all knowing one? I'm not in any competition here with anyone or trying to convince anyone I'm right. In fact look at all the past comments, this was a good discussion until you had to be a wise guy, lol.
Having said that your information looks interesting, glad you joined the conversation but knock off the sh>t, ok ?
