You have to go the The Center for Birds of Pray. North of Charleston. They fly birds of pray, take your telephoto and get ready to take amazing pictures of owls and hawks as the fly right at you. Also look up the oldest live oak in the US, it is around Edisto Island, while your at Edisto check out botany bay plantation heritage preserve which was just featured in November 2014 issue of National Geographic. The beach is amazing. Also check out the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston , you can walk over it and take photo's of the bridge.

Hi all. My wife and I are wintering in SC just below Charlotte (Fort Mill SC) for a month or month and a half. I am looking for interesting places to visit with my camera as day trips. We like parks and hiking (not too strenuous as we are in our 60s), scenic towns/villages, fun events that may be taking place, open to most anything. Would also be happy to meet up with any photographers in the area.
Thanks for your help.
Hi, I live in Charleston and would like to meet up with you and your wife one day to take you around for photo opportunities. Send me a PM and we can discuss date and place(s) of interest.

For wetlands with great birds, here are two. The walks are not long or difficult:
Santee Canal Park, Moncks Corner (as much or little as you care to walk. The alligators are all sleeping now--not a problem.)
Huntington Beach State Park, Myrtle Beach (easy parking to great bird sites)
Of course, you must know about historic Charleston. Take a horse carriage to get the scope so you will know where you want to walk. Plenty of some of the oldest churches, etc. in North America. SC is full of great places, these are just a few that are relatively easy on the legs.
Hunting Island state park is very photogenuic and it has a lighthouse too.
We were in Charleston about a year ago.
IMO forget Charleston unless you have at least several days or more. A week better.
Just too much to see. You'll be frustrated at having to leave.
Plan a separate trip .
Charleston is , well, phenomenal. A walk back in time.
Did I mention the food? Oh man!!
Got this photo of the Ravenel bridge w/ ground fog. Thought it was pretty cool.

Having lived in the Carolinas previously, here are a few destinations I might visit: Charleston, Ashville, Camden, Brattonsville, Charlotte, Kings Mountain, The Grand Strand, The Outer Banks, and perhaps...Paris Mountain. Wishing I was there at the moment! Good shooting!

Get up early one morning, maybe a Saturday with a forecast for sun and drive down to Charleston to catch dawn or at least as early in the morning as possible and start at the waterfront (White Point Garden) and work your way through the small streets heading toward Market St. Take the ferry to Ft Sumter as well.
We love living here in Bluffton, and Charleston is our favorite city. Charming if you take the horse drawn carriage around the city. Lots of history. Great photo opportunities.

Just left Charleston Tuesday after a 4 day visit. There is plenty go see and do, and plenty to photograph. Unfortunately, flowers are not in bloom this time of year, but it's still a beautiful southern city. I agree totally with the above advice. Also, go to eat at Hyman's Seafood on Meeting St. We are just finishing a month long trip to FL with the planned stopover in Charleston on the way home, and Hyman's was the best meal of the trip.
Here are a couple of shots I took. These were quickly processed and are not really "finished" works. They are processed as HDR because I find that HDR is a great way to take shots that have been taken by a million photographers and make them a little different.

Hey, I see you found Rock Hill's new fountain. Right around the corner is Glecairn Garden, which will be getting really nice in the spring. Also a short drive from you is Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden over in Belmont. About 20 minutes from Fort Mill. And actually Savannah is only 4 hrs from you. Riverwalk park is right across the river from you in RH too.

Chimney Rock is great for hiking and you can see all the way to Charlotte, NC! Different levels of trails and even one for the kids and it is pet friendly! Great roadside stands to pick up mountain goodies! While you are in the area, drop down to Boiling Springs, SC to Coolies and Strawberry Hill for some fresh farm stuff! BTW, the homemade ice cream at Strawberry Hill is so good! :)
You should start a Travel Office, been to most of these places, Biltmore (incredible), Charleston, kayaked on Lake Lure, been to Chimney Rock! Don't forget Sunset Beach NC, Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State park both in Murrells Inlet SC as well as dining on the marshwalk in MI.

Brevard is a great place for shoots. Lots of walking trails small water falls and creeks. Look for the legendary white squirrels while there. Then stay on hwy 64 to Highlands. You will pass by lots of waterfalls along the way.
Don't forget the Biltmore House in Asheville, that is a must do. While there drive up to the Grove Park Inn. Beautiful grounds, and buildings. Overlooks the city of Asheville. Many past presidents and dignitaries have stayed there. You can have dinner there and shoot spectacular sunset over the mountains. Get a table by the huge picture windows.
Also take a drive to Grandfather Mountain. Walk out on the swinging bridge for beautiful mountain vistas. From there you can get on the Blue Ridge Parkway and drive however far you want North or take it back towards Asheville.
Get on I-26 and drive to Charleston....then don't leave for a couple of days or more. Great place!
Take I-74 and then take exit to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. You can take the elevator up to the top of Chimney Rock, then walk down.
The Asheboro, NC zoo is really nice. The animals all roam free. Great place for getting good shots of animals in a more natural setting.
You are about 3 hours from the Nantahala Gorge near Bryson City in Western NC. Beautiful area.
You are about 6 hours or so from Savannah. Another place to spend a couple of days.
You have lots of options for one and two day trips from Charlotte and Rock Hill. Enjoy your time there.
Brevard is a great place for shoots. Lots of walk... (
