One thing I remember my Dad told me: "never get upset at someone that is trying to help you"

My dad would have torn off their arm and beaten them to death with it but I have to admit he was a tad cantankerous at times.

If you google "77mm rubber lenshood" you will see many choices at varying price points.

I enjoyed the later posters also. Thank you.

To finish the story of this day. I have mentioned I was using my flash with a soft box at 45 degrees. This lady started using her popup flash and she began shooting the little kids she was with instead of fish. My flash never crossed her line of fire at the large open tank and this was the only time are paths intersected that day.

Just about any camera store. My Schneider 210mm Symmar-S uses 77mm filters and lens shades. I've never had a problem finding one for that lens.

John mentioned in two posts that he uses a CPL. In the last instance he added, "A CPL is essential to cut through the glass and water."

That's what I was getting at. Circular polarizers are useful when you work in aquaria.

Another useful range of filters are various Wratten CC values of red, from about .05 to .30, depending upon water depth (deeper than 30 feet of water, there's little red light left). It's a pain in the posterior to use a gel filter holder, but they help remove the cyan cast from the water. If you start with good light and proper filtration, the image is cleaner... sometimes.

OTOH, if you jam the lens hood against the glass to eliminate reflections, and if the lighting in the tank is really bright, using no filter may be the right choice. Whether it works really depends on the venue. I like to avoid filters when I can, and correct color casts in post, if they're slight. If the tank is lit with fluorescents, all bets are off about the color balance, anyway.

77mm is one of the common size filter sizes. Look one Ebay, Amazon, Adorama, B&H, Etc.

Be careful and get the siliconized rubber lens hood. Not only do they last longer but when you smell the difference between those and a less expensive regular rubber one, you'll thank me for this advise! Call the photo store and ask. If they try to sell a regular rubber one and tell you the odor will go away after a brief period of time, tell them you won't live that long!

I bought a hat in Greece last summer and I was told it came with a lifetime guarantee, I asked for a discount as I was old and a lifetime guarantee wasn't that long.
The sales assistant declined to offer a discount :( :( :(

Yesterday I was shooting at a local aquarium. I have my DSLR, 35mm lens with rubber hood, CPL, flash gun and soft-box. There is a lady with a long lens on her DSLR with a hard hood and no filters. She seems to be having issues with getting the shots she wants and looking at me with what seems to be a snarly angry facial gestures. I was there with another gentleman from my camera club helping him get shots with suggetions. The question is should I have said something to her at the risk of being told to mind my own business?

You could ofhandidly say to her "It took me years to learn a system for successful aquarium photography". Now I get to share it. Need any help?
