From what I have seen, most people prefer to take video with GoPros or similar cameras. I'm not sure that there is a practical way to trigger a still camera from any distance, especially a camera light enough for a quadcopter.

Yes I have. Will not invest in it again. Bought a drone from local hobby shop.($780.00) gimbal for camera($190.00) canon eos m (around $300.00). The secound month I was using it I flew it up to about 600 ft it turned on it side and flew some where in town. I don't know what really happened. Some possibilities might be interference from another source. A flaw in the drone( how can you prove that without the equipment) or aliens. No matter all is gone. The photos and video I did get before the were ok but nothing to write home about. The drone has never been found or if it has they kept it. NOT WORTH IT.

That is the reason that I use a kite to lift my GoPro to take aerial photos, I set it on time-laps on 1 minute intervals, and when I'm done I can retreive everything because my kite is always connected to Mother Earth

I agree. I have a GoPro and I can remotely control it with the GoPro app on my iPhone...but you can't fly the drone and use your iPhone to control the GoPro at the same time.

especially a camera light enough for a quadcopter.

Ah! "...light enough for a camera..." That's a big problem unless you have big bucks.

Dave - - you didn't spend enough ca$h on the drone
You needed one with a GPS based 'fly home' option
-
Legislator in OK is proposing that homeowners should be free from liability if they SHOOT YOUR DRONE DOWN if it overflies the homeowners 'airspace' - - perhaps someone loosed a SAM on your bird ??

Funny you bring this up.
Just today, the wife was watching GMA (Good Morning Asparagus) and Ginger their weather gal was doing a piece in Iceland where they flew two drones over an active volcano and it's lava flowing from it.
Quite remarkable! But way out of reach for most "citizens".

I remember reading about a guy in Floriduh who lost his camera drone when it took off over the Gulf of Mexico. I believe his folly cost him around $3,000.

But they are getting more popular, and the video from them is quite fascinating to watch, most of the time.
But quite expensive to lose or crack up.

Perhaps just a simple case of pilot error?
