Great shots. I especially like the one of the bird peeking around the feeder.

What equipment? How far away?
I used a Tamron 28-105mm lens on a Sony a580 dslr. The feeder is about 4ft away from my dining room window. I was inside sitting at a table about 4ft. from the window. It was about 11:30am. sunny.

The settings were, F5.6 @ 1/500sec., ISO200, spot metering.

#1 for me is a perfect shot of the lady's pose, and color. A wall hanger for sure. The other shots are great also.

With regard to crappy photos being posted by members of the UHH, I have to agree and I also wonder have wondered why people say, "Great shot", when it really isn't that great and often is just a terrible photo.

But then I come to my senses and realize that not all of us are capable of taking really great shots. Some of us would not know a great shot if it bit us on the butt. For some of us that just got into the huge world of photography and maybe just got a new camera, pointing it at a sunset that looks beautiful and having a picture actually come out at all is simply magical. For those of us who take photographs of grandkids, vacation photos, wedding scenes of friends, and other sometimes mundane photos (to others) this could be a great accomplishment.

What I am trying to say is that sometimes people are perfectly happy with the photo that came out of the camera. For us that know about photography and how to get a great photograph it may be a crappy photograph but to that person who took the picture it is a masterpiece. Who are any of us to argue with their success.

Maybe we should at least consider the feelings of the picture taker. If the experts here on the UHH don't like the photo there is always the option of going to the next topic, just a click away. For others who may be in the same learning level as the picture taker a comment of, "Great capture", may be just the ticket to keep that person's level of interest up.

With regard to crappy photos being posted by membe... (show quote)
I agree whole heartily with what you are saying. However, there are some postings that are really, really poor in all aspects of the photo, yet people cheer them on. This is not right as a whole. This is a learning forum. If one is relatively an experienced photographer and see a bad photo that could have been otherwise been improved upon in camera, they should make a helpful comment in understandable language so as to help the poster along. That comment would not have to be negative at all.

When I first joined, I was getting all sorts of comments about my composition. It was bad even though the technical aspects were o.k.. I have had people like Mt shooter outright tell me a photo of mine was crap with no explanation. I was not offended in the least for he knew I could have done better and he has seen enough of my stuff that he knew that he did not have to say much more. That is a little different. He has never said anything like that to a newbie. There was already a feeling of trust between us. Graham Smith has also used the same wordage with some of my posts but goes on to explain why he thought so and goes on to offer a helpful tip. Graham also knew enough of me by then to understand that I had a very good sense of humor and that I knew what he was saying. Again, he would never say that to some one he is not familiar with.

But yes, I think that people should post their photographs even if they are very poorly done just for the simple reason that they enjoy the hobby and enjoy sharing their photos with others. Those whom give high praise to such photos are indeed doing the poster an injustice when in fact the person giving the high praise knows better. It does not take much to give the poster a little helpful advice or criticism. This sort of irks me that they don't. I know that I would not be half as far along as I am now if it weren't for all the help that I have received here, on UHH. This is the only forum that I belong to.
