Canon 7D2 problem, question

I own a 7D2 and a 5D3 and I'm having the same problem with both camera. I can figure out how to select which card I want to shoot to, such as card one (CF card) and it will shoot and record in raw. My problem is getting card to (SD card) to shoot and record in JPEG. I can set it so it will record in raw and JPEG on the different cards but it records both cards at the same time. I know it's possible to select one card or the other and have them record differently such as card one is raw in card two is a JPEG. But for some reason I can't find those settings and am having trouble explaining this.

If I shoot card one and have it recording raw it sets up card two to record in raw also. It won't allow me to set up card two to record a JPEG. It insists I shoot both cards in raw. If I change card two to recording a JPEG, when I shoot it records on both cards. I know there is a way to set it up so that I can choose which card I want to shoot, and I can shoot one in raw and one in JPEG but I can't figure out how.

Can someone please tell me how I can set this up so that I can choose one card or the other and have one shoot in raw and the other shoot in JPEG?

Jim, why don't you just call Canon and have them walk you through it? ;-)

I'm just having one of those stupid days, I didn't think about that. You happen and the phone number for them? I guess I could go to their website and get it.

Go here and download the online manual:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d_mark_ii#BrochuresAndManuals

Go to page 146 for instructions. Basically, you push the "Menu" button on your camera, then check under tools (Looks like a wrench head) for "Record Func and card select". From there you can select how the cards record.
The manual to download is near the bottom of the list. About 31Mb.
I believe it is also on the camera's software disk. The paper manual is not as complete as the digital one.

I thank you for the information that I have already downloaded the manual. I spent over a half an hour going crazy reading those pages and trying to do everything way I want to. I just got off the phone with Canon and they tell me it's not possible. See my next message.

Before anybody else goes crazy like I have been, I just got off the phone with Canon and they tell me it's not possible. If you want to be able to select one card or the other you can do that but it will set up both cards to record in either raw or JPEG.

You can set up the cards to record differently but when you do it will shoot and record to both cards. It's not possible to select the card you want to shoot to and have the other card set up the other way.

I drove the poor Canon tech crazy, because he couldn't believe it couldn't be done. He finally admitted it's not possible.

He did document my phone call. He also is putting in a request to have this made possible on the next firmware update. He suggested that if anybody else wants this set up they should call and request it be included in the next firmware. Canon's phone number for technical support for cameras is 800–652-2666.

Time to go Nikon Jim! ;-) ;-)
They all let you designate which card is primary and which card is secondary. Record images to both simultaneously, use the secondary card automatically when the primary is full, or record JPG to one and RAW to the other. Even record stills to one and Video to the other if you so choose. I cannot believe the Canons do not have that versatility but the only Canon bodies I have in the store at the moment are the 6D, 70D and T5i's, all single card cameras. My 7DMkII's are coming next Monday and the 5DMkIII's the week after.

Way to go MT. I think we finally wore him down. Should we set him up with a spotty D600 and a 18-55 kit lens? lol. ;)

S.S......you're a riot! Funny Guy!

I thought I had read things on the web about people with Canons doing just that. Were those people using a hack, or did something change in the firmware?

Edit: Just found an article on the Canon site dated April 19 2013 that talks about doing just that, RAW to one card, JPEG to the second card. Said the menu option was "record separately". However, this was for the 1DX. Other articles talk about that option on 5DIII also.
It would seem that in 2013 and 2014 you could do it. So something changed, firmware!?!? Or was Murphy messing with oldtool2 and the Canon tech at the same time?

I think I read where the Magic Lantern Hack will allow those selections, but maybe not on all models.

Griz, it IS possible that Canon tech just flat out didn't know.
Maybe I'll stop giving away all my gear, and wait a page or two...., just in case!
It's too late for my 200 1.8. I already gave it to a little 13 year old girl that's gonna super-glue her iPhone onto it. That will be one bad-a$$ iPhone!!!

found this: (sorry, can't test it my 6D has only one slot)
to set up the Canon 5D Mark III to write to both the CF and SD card slots:

Press the Menu button

Select the first folder on the yellow tab with the wrench icon
Select func+card/folder sel.

Select the Record func. and select either Record Separately or Record Multiple

· Record Mulltiple will record the same file type and size to both slots

· Record Separately will allow you to write different file types/sizes to each card slot.

· Standard will write to only one card.

Jim - I read the post and the discussion and maybe I misread...but the 5DIII will write RAW to one card and JPEG to the other. I have my camera set to this exact configuration (RAW on the CF). Let me read again and see if I understand. It took me a bit (like 15 - 20 minutes) to figure it out as I remember the process.

I didn't read LFingar's link, but I'm confident this will help as I figured it out myself just from the manual and playing with it ....
