I just tried out my Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit with the iPad Air 2 and the images transferred just fine. It is called 'kit' because you get two ways to transfer: camera direct via USB or from the memory SSD chip. I prefer the chip method as there is less bulk to fumble with. I have now experience with transferring RAW images.

That does work fine, but it does not permit control of the camera settings, which is what a good tethered solution would offer. (Camranger/DSLR Dashboard, etc). Not sure what the OP is looking for.

Thats good to know but I don't want to transfer images, I just want to use the iPad as a large viewfinder.

BTW, with DSLR Dashboard on Android, you have the ability to see the image as well as focus by touching anywhere on the screen in live view.

Tons of apps out there to pick through.

My D3300 came with the little WU-1a dongle to make it WiFi with my android phone.
Here's the APP

But if you decide on an IPad, there appears to be apps for them as well. :?

One thing I noticed with mine (WU-1a) was it tends to eat the camera battery and the phone battery because they are WiFi'd together in a constant connection.
But I can see the cameras pictures, or choose a live view with control.

But the dongle appears to be for controlling the camera, and not as an alternative viewing device for wireless monitors.

In conclusion, you might get one of the mini tablets like the DIL hauls around for her real estate business. It's a phone, but kinda huge.
I did try to get my IPad Stoneage Version to work, but it can't. It's just too darned old. :hunf:

Take a look at my blogpost:

If you just want to shoot tethered, then all you need is an OTG cable and it is indeed plug and play. The OTG cable is about $3, and the two software packages that work with Canon are donationware - DSLR Controller (Canon only) and DSLR Dashboard - (Canon, Nikon and possibly others as well).

I would suggest that the iPad is not the best platform for doing this - and that the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Note will have a better display and more software options.

I use my Tab Pro 12.2 as a portfolio - the images look stunning on it. Especially compared to the comparably priced but much smaller screened iPad Air with Retina.

Gene, I read your blog, thanks for the link. Toward the end You mention using a USB connection between the D800 and the Android device. This leads me to ask, if you know if it would be possible to use the wired USB approach with an iPad? I know the iPad has no USB port, however the Apple Digital Camera Connection Kit (link below) connects to the iPad port and has a USB port. Do you know if I can use the DSLR Dashboard app wired using that device? I already have the device and if it will work, all I need is DSLR Dashboard. Like the OP, I'd prefer a wired connection, at least for now.
