Nikon and I Pad Question

I am a Nikon shooter and I am thinking of getting an I Pad. I am interested in using the I Pad as an external monitor, I know about camranger but I would prefer a tethered connection for the sake of speed. I know I can get a cable and a rig from Tethertools or the like, but will this simply plug and play? I have heard of an App for Cannon shooters but what about Nikon?

I appreciate the benefit of your knowledge....Thanks

Great question Photogmikeg. I have been looking for a solution to using
my iPads as monitors. I am looking to connect my new Sony's. Content Manager Mobile, Sony's Playmemories etc. I have a lot if Nikon lenses but now using Sony mirrorless camera's like the a7s. They all have wifi but like you on want a reliable cable. Will look and ask associates (I am a producer that is now my own one man band creator, shooter, editor etc.
Pro monitors for video and stills are very expensive. Marshall etc. and my iPads have terrific picture that to me is close to the original.
Stay tuned.
PS I would think the HDMI port would be the answer. My D800 had that even 2 years ago.

Look at Nikon's Camera Control Pro. It is a tethered and wireless option ( After checking with my contacts at Nikon. It only works on MAC os and not IOS).

The off the record recommendation I got was Lightroom Cloud tethered.

Thanks, I work on a MAC. In the studio I was tethering to a Aperture which is great except Apple is abandoning it. I recently switched to Light Room which I like a lot and now tether to it. What I was hoping to do us the iPad in the field as an extension of Live View, If I can control the camera from it fine, but my main interest is live view.

On further review.. I am not sure Lightroom will do live view though.

Just out of curiosity...do you not like laptops? for the cost of a decent iPad, ($500) you could certainly get by with a reasonably priced laptop, or for $72 per month, 0% interest for 18 months... Mac Book Pro w/Retina display ($1,200.00) isn't a bad deal. If PC works for you, check out this place...

He can also do Tiger Direct and get a PC laptop refurbished (which means off of lease) or a good deal on a PC but they do not carry Apple (except for some parts.

No, I have no problem with laptops. I tether to a Mac Book Pro , I am not looking for an off capture/storage solution. I am looking for a larger live view monitor. I could go out and spend $500-$700 on a dedicated off camera monitor. I would rather spend that money on an iPad which will give me a lot more functionality even when I am not using it on my cameras.

I have an iPad Air. I simply plug my SD card into what they call a "lightening photo adaplter"

Take a look at my blogpost:

http://pixeldiarist.blogspot.com/

If you just want to shoot tethered, then all you need is an OTG cable and it is indeed plug and play. The OTG cable is about $3, and the two software packages that work with Canon are donationware - DSLR Controller (Canon only) and DSLR Dashboard - (Canon, Nikon and possibly others as well).

I would suggest that the iPad is not the best platform for doing this - and that the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Note will have a better display and more software options.

I use my Tab Pro 12.2 as a portfolio - the images look stunning on it. Especially compared to the comparably priced but much smaller screened iPad Air with Retina.

SHHHH! I'll never tell :)

The apps are great - Camranger, DSLR Dashboard - you can do HDR bracketing, focus stacking, it has an intervalometer, and you can control every adjustable parameter on the camera. The other alternative is to use a PC/Macbook/iPad/iPhone and use Nikon Camera Control 2 for the same adjustability, or Capture One/Capture Pilot - which works great as well.

I just tried out my Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit with the iPad Air 2 and the images transferred just fine. It is called 'kit' because you get two ways to transfer: camera direct via USB or from the memory SSD chip. I prefer the chip method as there is less bulk to fumble with. I have now experience with transferring RAW images.
