My girlfriend and I took this picture today from my cell phone and would really like to enlarge it to atleast a 12x18. Would like to have it framed and would like to take next year's picture holding this picture and continue throught the years holding last years picture. Is there any way to enlarge this without losing quality and without the blurry pixelation? I have photoshop, I know there is a way to enlarge it without losing quality but not sure how to do it.

I see you are a new user. Welcome to the Hogs. As you can see we have really wonderful people in this group. My heart sings. :) :) :) :) :)

Feel free to still post there in the Post Processing board.
I won't be offended.
I'm not too happy with what I have done with the white jacket.
I am sure someone else can do a better job.

It looks great, thank you very much!

I have resized image to 12x18" and added some more tree on the left to fill out the image.
The girls jumper was blown out so changed it to yellow to make it a little less blinding.

I like it! Thanks so much

With regard to enlargement and pixelation, it all depends on your cell phone. How many pixels is your phone?

8.7 megapixels.

Rev, welcome to the Hog.
I say just go for it. Take it to Costco and just print it, it's not very expensive there. If it comes out OK and you get brave, try going bigger.
My big, burning question, why did you make her wear that funny hat?!?!

You can make a real nice 16 inch print. I just did my grandaughter from a 7mp? cell phone photo, no nothing done to it, just hit print, came out real nice.

Hmm, I'll have to try that if these don't come out as planned. Thanks!

If you print to 18" height, your resolution will be 163ppi, which will provide a very good to excellent looking image. But at that same resolution, the aspect ratio of the picture will only give you a 10" width at that resolution. You could crop the top and/or bottom to fill the width of your 12x18 but it will be at 134ppi which will not be as crisp, but still ok.

You might try resampling, to a higher ppi which may or may not provide a better image.

Chances are the print lab making the print has good resizing software and will take care of all of that for you.

This site is very helpful for figuring out print resolutions, viewing distances and quality:

There is enough detail to print a 12 x 18, however IMHO the photo needs a bit of PP first. The highlights are blown, so the detail is lost. It also is a bit flat, lacking contrast.
What I did was, in Camera Raw.....
Lower exposure and highlights to remove clipping,
Lower blacks and raise clarity to improve contrast and make it "pop" a bit.
I cropped it to 3:2 ratio, then in Perfect Resize, I resized to 12x18 at 240ppi.
Finally, back in Camera Raw I added some sharpening.
My result......

Try Googling "how to resize a photograph in Photoshop." The search will return a number of essays and tutorials for doing this resizing.

Unless it's my monitor, looks like she was drenched in Cheese Doodle dust. Humm, all the other pics look fine.

You can eliminate all pixilation but the picture sharpness is what it is and blowing it up will make any lack of sharpness more evident. I took your photo and did three basic things. 1. Changed the aspect ratio to 18x12 using the Photoshop crop tool. 2. Went into IMAGE, IMAGE SIZE, and changed the actual size to 18x12 and the pixels/dots per inch to 300. I also reduced the snow brightness and took a tad bit of red out of their faces. You can do the same thing and play around with the image till you have exactly what you want. There is no pixilation in the final image but it is not as sharp as it would be if shot with a good DSLR or mirrorless camera and lens.

18x12 aspect ratio, 300 dpi
18x12 aspect ratio, 300 dpi...
