for yrs I've used very little post (its what I wish to do). I have a simple program from Picasa that allows me to crop and make small adjustments. I've never shot RAW and up to now I am ok with that as well. I recently shot a wedding for a friend and I shot Raw as well as Jpeg for them. I would like to see what I can do with a raw file (been hearing for years that I should). Picasa wont work with raw. Wondering what affordable programs you use that are easy to get to know and not like landing the space shuttle. Please try to avoid responding outside of those guidelines and please don't correct or comment on others post. I just want a few suggestions as a reason why you like or don't like. thank you in advance.

Your camera should have come with a disk that has a simple editing program that works with its form of RAW.

Or get Photo Shop Elements 13 for less than $100 from Costco or Sam's Club. Walmart is selling off remaining copies of PSE 12 online for a few buck off.

It has a "Guided" mode where you pick from a list of things to do and it then takes you through the process step by step.

Adobe Creative Cloud for Photographers gets you Lightroom and Photoshop for $9.99/mo. You can start with a trial period. You also get to install both on two computers.

Your photos ARE NOT stored "in the cloud", you're just using the software as a service in stead of shelling out $500-700.

Capture One from Phase One is another option. Phocus from Hasselblad is a free option if it works with your camera (they offer support for cameras other than theirs). Raw Therapee is a free/open source option.

Adobe creative cloud. 9.95 a month. In photoshop go into raw filter.
As a beginner you can make fantastic adjustments. As you learn it just gets better. There are many examples on YouTube Here is one.

For minor editing (exposure, contrast, color saturation, sharpness), I use free FastStone Image Viewer v5.3 http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Probably the easiest raw program to use and free is ufraw it is capable of reading most raw files particularly dng, it reads my panasonic raw files. It is limited without an adjustment brush or sharpening and it can save in a few different formats its natural output is to pass the images to the GIMP for processing. I think you will like it for basic editing.

There are others such as raw therapy , darktable and lightzone also free but they are more complicated to learn. So for a few simple steps you may find ufraw simple enough to start with. Later on you'll be wanting to do more selectively lightening an area of the image and applying gradients and raw sharpening. These will need better tools but your initial work with ufraw will be a good foundation to build from.

I just realized I have Adobe 5 from many years ago when a friend gave it to me. should I assume the newer 13 is that much different.? I can't seem to find cropping on adobe 5 and find it not all that exciting. Maybe that why I haven't used it in all these years. ?

That's old... It may not even support the RAW files from your camera.

If you really want to get into RAW, just get Lightroom. It's easy enough to learn the basics (there are a ton of tutorial guides and videos on YouTube), it and Photoshop that you get with the Creative Cloud plan are pretty much the most widely used two pieces of software in the industry, so there is a ton of good, free and paid support out there.

Both handle JPEGs very well as well.

just looking over the photoshop elements 5 and can't seem to find white balance adjustment. Over the past year my travels to shops and talking to other photogs I am learning to set all my setting to Nuetral or off and fix, adjust them all in post. Not a fan of the idea but willing to look into it. My Canon 5dm3 and 7dm2 both have creative shooting modes and I am being told to keep them neutral and not to enhance any features in the taking of photos. I am told to set white balance to auto and fix it later. One person really told me to shoot in the Green mode of my camera and just fix it all later. wow, that aint gonna happen. Part of me likes "taking " the photo the way I want it and cropping it later. Not excited about spending time to fix every single shot I take.

you should be able to download Digital Photo Professional: from canon for free
I think there are options to allow you to process a raw image as you can in camera to jpeg. The difference being you have the raw data for you to tweak the image further.
