Would you rather just have the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS in your bag of tricks or have the Canon 85 1.8, Canon 135 2.0, and Canon 200 2.8? Why?

I have the Canon 6D btw and shoot a bit of everything.

Both options. Versatility unlimited with a 2x T/C.

So you would like all 4 lenses and a 2x. 8-) Nice.

I am getting the 135 2.0 for Christmas and it has caused me to question a couple of my current lenses. I am debating selling my 50 1.4 and getting the 85 1.8 and selling the 70-200 2.8 and getting the 200 2.8. Of course my husband wants the 50 1.4 so maybe he should buy the 85 1.8 and then we can switch back and forth. Or I could keep them both. ;)

For myself, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. It costs more than the earlier model, but is considered superior. For a lens of that investment the extra cost seems worth it if it is going to be used extensively.

As a versatile walk around lens, especially for indoor / low light situations it is very fine.

The other lenses, as primes, may well out perform it, but with lower all around versatility. It really depends what use you want to put them to.

Plus your recent responses shed more light on the situation....

Good luck

The primes for me.
The extra light gathering, the shallower DOF.
And I just like primes. For me, they simplify things.
Maybe the Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 SF instead of the 135mm F/2.

EDIT:
I should have said, that is sort of what i have already.
I don't have a 70-200mm
I have the 50 F/1.4, the 100mm F/2.8 macro(non-L), the 135mm F/2.8SF, the 200mm F/2.8.

Have you thought of the 100mm F/2 instead of both the 85 & 135mm?
Or do you already have that focal length in macro?

No I don't have a 100 mm and I really fell in love with the 135mm 2.0 (so happy I got it for Christmas! )

Dame, the 70-200mm is a terrific lens when I am on the move. It is versatile and offers a whole bag full of focal options. That is the beauty of the zooms. When I shoot in a stationary mode the prime lenses are what I use. The more control I have in making a shot the more I am likely to shoot prime. During happy hour(s) primes really excel. The remark re T/c was intended seriously. Except the EF85, all the others work with T/Cs. Those four lenses and a T/C could be a whole career. Just a thought. Merry Christmas!

For my needs the Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II USM. Your choice depends upon what you are shooting. I find a really good zoom [L] lens invaluable when shooting sports, nature, street, anytime you stand to lose the shot due to the time taken when switching lenses. Multiple cameras are a plus in this situation. I also love the ability to travel light and crop in camera maximizing the IQ. As I reiterate it all depends on what your shooting. What subjects do you shoot?

Well heck. Maybe I should just add a 2x to my bag and call it good for right now.

What about the 85mm 1.4 and keep the 70-200 2.8.

Wolf, as Magic has asked, what are your uses? If I had to guess I'd say you are landscaping as you shoot with the 6d. NOT an action camera.
Do you need the speed of the zoom?
Personally I shoot a lot of sports and don't have the 2.8. I have the cheap little $600 f4. It's super light and small and negligible sharpness-wise. For outdoors you don't need ANY speed.
Someday I will have to break down and get the 2.8, but NOT because I need the speed as I have fast primes for those duties. I will need it just so I can take advantage of the extra sensitive focus points that are activated by lenses f2.8 and faster. It's the reason pro sports shooters use them outdoors, along with the 400 f2.8. Not for the speed but for the extra hit rate while focusing.
It's a great lens if you have a use for it, but there are a lot of special lenses that may do a better job, like the 135 f2.
Give us a lot more info and we can be more specific. ;-)
If money is no issue, by all mean, get them all!

Personally, I'd go with option #2, multiple lenses. Lens zooming isn't something I do very much with my DSLR; I'm more into zooming with my feet, and switching lenses as needed. But everyone has to develop their own approach and style for photography.

Wolf, as Magic has asked, what are your uses? If I... (show quote)

I shoot a bit of everything. Landscape, portrait, homes, action, wildlife... I bought the 70-200 2.8 for shooting horses, horse shows inside arenas. Not a lot of light in there at times. I've also found with the faster lenses my 6d does a real good job with the action shots with the dirtbikes. ;) And my husband does have the Canon 7d that is essentially my camera too since he never uses it.

I wish money was no option! Maybe someday I'll get lucky and it wont be! haha!
