Photogrl this will drive me nuts! Pouring and ugly here, but I do bracket. I will try to give it a go - or just post some bracketed shots. It is a good learning experience. Too much for my brain this AM. This challenge makes me

NUTTY

Thank you for the lil' triangle thing - that is helpful.
Can you bracket with a P&S? I have no idea? Maybe I'll just find a picture & you can tell me if the colors are ok & the WB looks good. lol. :D
Depends on work, if I can play or not, we'll see ;) giggle.
The one feature my Nikon D3100 does not have is bracketing, so this challenge is really good for me!
Well no ... bracketing is a series of photos with 1 photo taken on either side of the base exposure -2,0,+2.
While yes you do an exposure adjustment for that also it's not the same . For this challenge the adjustment should only go 1 direction .. either less exposure or more but not both.

Like I said, it is driving me nutty

Lol, Pat! You're going to spoil us all with these pics of yourself that you've been posting every morning. I'm going to be looking for it every morning along with Frankie's daily rooster pic! By the way, I wish you weren't so far away or I'd ask you for violin lessons. My Grandfather was a talented violinist and I've held on all these years to my oldest daughter's violin in hopes to learn some day. She never pursued it after a year of lessons. To play the violin is on my bucket list! I know music well, and I feel that I could take it and run with after learning the basics and technique. One thing that intimidates me is that my double chin becomes so prevalent when holding the violin in position! Lol!

It's always nice to go to bed each night a little less dumb! Lol!
Don't knock your self out over histograms. Easy..read the manual ant the peaks will tell you if you have over or under exposed. However, I rely on my interior logic...if it looks good for me, then I'm fine

Maybe I will too because i am hoping by days end I will understand my histogram a little :-)
It looks like you did great!
Wow .. looks like I threw a curve ball to everyone LOL ...
This is something I need to work on ... Exposure Compensation. Nothing to do with Bracketing. It is all about compensating visually for the camera's auto metering system. Quite frankly something I have found much easier to do in post processing rather than with the camera. Something I am going to work on today.
I can see by your responses I gave too much explanation of the physical aspects of it ... Information Overload LOL.
The hubby is giving me the KISS (keep it simple stupid) evil eye LOL .
So let's do this. Set up and take the best shot you can ....any subject .... with all your knowledge it shouldn't be that difficult .... No Post Processing ... And we will see where your exposure compensation is visually from your post. Please post your settings ... to include the exposure setting. (auto, evaluative, centered... or if you change it tell us how much you changed it -2,-1, or+1,+2)
WOW roadrunner...if all i have to do is bracket one way...to wake up a little smarter..Ill do it everyday.
hmmmm if you do three than it really can be considered both ways...Im so confused.
PAT...you are a funny oney

Good job Ann .. did you use a flash ? Being indoors ...If your camera was on auto ... and not P or program mode .. I'm betting yes the flash went off. Can you see how you lost the coloring in the blue fabric in the second shot? That would be something that you would want to keep as it adds to the asthetic look of the photo .. so I'm thinking maybe -1/2 stop would have been enough in this case. Instead of -2.... :)
The book looks much better in the second shot though :)

Welcome to Day 54 :)
Are we to post the before and after photos? If you had to compensate and you want to then yes .. otherwise just pick which one looks best to your eyes and let us know the settings (exposure settings mainly)

I have read my manual as well as a book called A Short Course in Canon Powershot SX30 IS Photography. The peaks do not make sense to me in relation to the photo. I don't understand where the peak applies to the photo. I have looked at tutorials and you tubes and for some reason it isn't sinking in. I guess I have no interior logic when it comes to the histogram. Sure I can look at the photo and tell if it is over or under exposed and try to make changes that will fix that but the histogram is like... french or spanish to me - I just haven't comprehended it yet. I do keep trying.
Bracketing is fine ... but my question to you is .. which one of these 3 photos looks like the exposure is where it should be for that scene ?
You show an exposure setting of -1 2/3, -1, and +1 1/3
Was your camera in program mode or something else?
I don't see a base exposure setting of 0. So taking your settings into consideration ... and say you decided that -1 is your starting point ... which is perfectly fine in these conditions with the snow and all the white... then your positive number should have been 1/3 .. for bracketing you want the numbers to be an even spread .. the same amount underexposed as overexposed.
are you expecting a merge?
