Point and Shoot --- JPEG redone in Lightroom

Photo taken on a fly fishing drift boat trip, fishing for steelhead, on the Chetco River in south western Oregon.
Camera is a point and shoot Canon PowerShot SD900 in auto mode.
Top image is a JPEG just as the camera processed it with no post processing applied except cropping for a better composition.
Bottom image was processed through Lightroom:
white balance corrected
white point and black point set
vibrance set to +30
tone curve set to Medium Contrast
sharpening set to amount of 52, radius 0.5, detail to 60, and masking set to 62
Click the download tab under each picture to get a larger view.

It really is amazing what a person can do with a pic taken with a point & shoot redone in lightroom. It turned out nice!

It does pop out nicely. There was some loss of detail in the shadows.

If you want to get the details back in the shadows, it's easy to do in Lightroom 3 and 4 Beta. In 3, it's the "Fill Light" slider in the Develop module. In 4 Beta, it's the "Shadows" slider.

On my work monitor it appears as though you've lost quite a bit of the highlights in the right side of the image and other areas where shadows are.

We have the new Lightroom on order, but I do not like the black patch on the right hand side, would it be better to crop it out?

Also, for information, when you want to offer a larger picture, post the original, not a small version of it. What we get here is nothing but a glorified thumbnail.

I'm with Photoman in that if you want the main subject the boat it needs cropped in more or if you were able to zoom in more do that and put the boat on the bottom left focus point in the rule of thirds. Other than that if you like the pictures composition the way it is I think it would be better doing a pseudoHDR to get better tonality as well as keeping the details in the shadows and highlights

thanks for all that info - when i look at #1 and #2 the only difference I see is that you darkened and altered the green of the trees. What is the point of posting this image? What is it you want?

I am talking about the tutorial of the Lightroom boat scene. The right hand side is so black with no detail. Should you have cropped it out as it does nothing to enhance the photograph at all.

i know nothing of lightroom or tutorials..............as to your question regarding the shadow area. No, I would not crop it because its the only contrast you have in this scene and without it - it's just another snap shot taking off the side of the boat shot.
