I am new to this hobby. I would like to explore options on equipment - i.e. - brands, etc. - which is best? - Nikon, Canon, Pentax, others? - looking to purchase something soon - but so many choices. Looking between DSLR - Nikon - D3100, D3200, D3300, D5100, etc., etc. - or Canon EOS - as I say so many choices? - Where do I start and what should I look for? Looking for general photography - exploring options on which direction I would like to go.
Would appreciate any pointers? Thank you.

R, welcome to the Hog.
Yes, it is confusing. Save yourself a lot of time. Just do what a majority of Pros do and shoot Canon.
Canon is #1 for a reason, and it ain't advertising.
But you could also go with #2, or #3, or #4............., are you getting my drift!??

When watching a sporting event or media story, check out the dominence of the white Canon L lenses. That's a not so subtle hint as to what the pros use.

SS,
Thank you for your advice. As you say, it's confusing when getting started - just wanting to make a good decision that will last for some time. Don't want to invest in equipment that will not meet my needs once I get into this gig. With all the choices, sometimes it's overwhelming to say the least. Should I focus on higher Mp ratings on the camera - also some have Wifi capabilities? - your thoughts?

don't spend a lot of money-just about any of the well known brands of equipment will make you happy. Photograph for a while and if you are still serious about your hobby you will make changes anyway. Over the years most photographers have bought and sold their equiptment many times.

The best advice I received about buying a camera was twofold: Hold a number in your hands until you find one that "feels right." then stick to your budget.

Sounds like you gravitate toward Canon. I appreciate your thoughts - will review the options with this course.

R, when you reply, do so with the "quote reply", option, that way the persons quote you are replying to will show up, and we all know to whom you are responding to.
