doesn't anyone here see the other side????
Give him $5,000 for the photo...his salesmanship warrants that much, just like P.T. Barnum's lines of bull got rewarded. (Who among us wouldn't take $5,000 for one of our photos?)
The rest of the money ($6,495,000) should then be given to where it can do some good....cancer research, feeding the poor, (my special cause) Wounded Warriors.
There's too much suffering in this world...and this case of a buyer with too much money and a seller with too much bull---- proves that most of the money in this world is in the wrong hands.....

A few years ago I saw a colour photo of Antelope Canyon by Peter Lik.

At the time, not knowing that this was a well-known natural phenomenon, I was very impressed and, noting he had a highly inflated price on it I assumed this was also a very unique shot.

But that was before I did a search and found there was any number of very similar photos by many other photographers - (leaving me wondering if they copied him or he copied them).

Anyway, he's now re-processed the original colour photo, done a slight crop and applied a black and white conversion and sold it for $6.5 million! ... I know he is a master of self promotion, but I just don't get it - why would ANYone pay that much?

Here's the colour version

And here's the B/W version in a Guardian article - I tend to somewhat agree with the authors comments

"I don't get it" ?

"High Prices Paid for Photographs" might have been a better alternative to your topic heading.

Personally, if someone with that much money to throw around, wanted to give me 6.5 mil for a so so photo or any photo, YES!

Not only do I wonder why anyone would pay so much, I also wonder why they would pay for something that isn't even particularly good. I have several shots from within the canyon that I feel are superior to this photo. In fact, I still fail to see what all the fuss is about.

I don't get it either.

You can't autograph it Peter Lik! Just a mere autograph by a famous person is often worth thousands of dollars. Still I think this was over priced by maybe 6.4 million!

I do feel the press release seems to infer that Bella Luna is a single capture, however I remember reading some discussions about it a few years ago, and Lik not only indicated that it was a composite, but also indicated the different exposures used. While that omission is annoying to we photographers, it is apparently inconsequential to many (maybe most) buyers of high priced art (given he sold an edition of 950 prints at 10K a pop).

What should be consequential to them is the fact that it makes a mockery of physics and believability, like it was slapped together by a second grader who doesn't understand that clouds can't be behind the moon, and that if the sun is setting behind the moon, it can't also be lighting it up from the front.

Most wealth is inherited. So, unless you can wisely pick your parents, the aphorism stands.

There really isn't anything to get. It's a result of fashion, a sort of insanity and someone having far far too much money. There is no rationale for any of these.
In 1975 Tom Wolfe wrote a little book titled "The Painted Word". It comes as close to explaining this sort of weirdness as anything I've seen.

Whatever one thinks of the photographer and/or his photo, the end result is he had to have laughed all the way to the bank, and the person who bought it not only could afford it, but now has bragging rights for possessing the most expensive photograph in the world.

Hi John

I like the B/W version a lot better it's very good work. Remember he's recognized photographer he commands this type of money. There's no reason for you not to understand this just accept it!. If anyone us reach his level we might command just as such? Just spend your time doing what you like to do take lot's of memorable photos.

The price or worth of anything is what someone is willing to pay for it...it is that simple...

I don't get it either....I can find no recognizable form, function, or theme to this photograph
maybe I should look throught the hundreds of photograps I have deleted over the years....might be a million dollar work of art in there

I guess all the chatter and controversy over this image promotes him even more. That's why he's a master at product promotion.
