These were the first words that came out of my mouth too... Because they can.
I disagree with Mr. Jones in the second link. I think that photography can be art. I think he has some issues of his own. But... as for why people will pay so much for a photo like this?... They have the money, they want something and they buy it. Maybe they want to be able to say, "I paid$6.5m for this. Maybe they really did love it... that much. Who knows.

Not only do I wonder why anyone would pay so much, I also wonder why they would pay for something that isn't even particularly good. I have several shots from within the canyon that I feel are superior to this photo. In fact, I still fail to see what all the fuss is about.

I don't get it either.

I used to be that artists weren't appreciated for their works until long after they were dead. Guess that is out the window too!

Some people "get it," some don't.
The title of the piece is "Phantom" by the way.

Wow, I really am surprised at the negativity here. Reminds me about the joke about musicians, photographers can be put in place of "musician" here.

How many photographers does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one, while the rest stand around and tell him how they would have done it better.

In my humble opinion, so far, nobody has done it better, that's why it is a record. Maybe you will shoot the next record, if someone sees what you produced, and loves it so much that they are willing to spend $millions, would you turn them away? Come on people. Some love HDR, some love selective color, some love vivid colors, some like desaturated colors. If the photo "spoke" to the buyer, then why wouldn't we be thrilled for the photographer.

Evidently, some people like my work, because they pay me my price. Compared to Cliff, Russ, and Bobby, I'm nowhere in their league, and know it. Thankfully, others see merit in what I provide and pay for it. I sure hope that people like Cliff, Russ and Bobby (among others) here on the Hog, don't spend their time knocking down my work behind my back, just to make themselves feel better.

If you really don't like that he's selling his "inferior work to yours" for so much, why aren't you out there selling your "much better" work for even more?

Annnnnnd I'm now off my soapbox.

Despite the hyperbole of the image being a "mockery of physics"

When an image can't exist without two suns, it is not hyperbole to call it a mockery of physics. It's just accurate.

Along the line of defying physics, try this one on for size. Should we all deny any enjoyment or fascination we might feel in looking at this image because it so plainly seems to defy the rules of the physical world?

This merely proves my point, because that image could easily happen, and in fact does. Just because it looks like rock doesn't mean it is. Bella Luna could not exist, ever.

He did it because someone was willing to pay for it.
