....but you should, as it is essentially the same glass, only made by Canon and not Nikon.

For portraits I mostly use an EF 24-105 f/4 IS with an off camera 580ex speedlight set for ETTL.

But, when I want a Cannon … I use my 300 2.8 IS with a 2x.

My choices are 50mm or 105mm fast/low light.

I agree. I use my 24-105 the most for convenience.
But any cheap lens will work short of wider than 50mm.
The 85mm 1.8 is very good and fairly inexpensive with excellent bokeh if it's needed.
It's too easy to go crazy with the lenses and it's just not necessary !!
When your friend is making good money, then get the crazy glass!

I got all of the 'crazy' glass when I was single. Then my wife married me for my lenses when she found that they fit her Rebel.

Bear, you mis-read. I said, CRAZY glass, not crazy glass!
We're talking real MAN glass here.
My wife wouldn't know the difference between a 1Dx or an Instamatic, but if she did, she wouldn't touch my MAN glass
Bear, MAN glass, sometimes called, MAN Cannons, weighs 7 pounds + per lens.
Wives don't touch MAN glass/MAN Cannons !!

I HEAR you man ….
She can't handle my 300 2.8 IS with a 2x that weighs 9lbs without the body.
She sticks with the 17-40 as she likes to get close to her work.

If you are shooting a Cannon, you need a really big lens.

Portrait length is portrait length, doesn't matter what the brand, only if it's full frame or cropped. That puts you at anywhere from 35 to 200 mm. The f stop requirement will just depend on how much light you have.

Cannon, as most know, is not a brand of camera. Meaningless comment.

Knock off the BS, Kmgw9v. Is a typo more important than the meaning of the question?

I said it was a meaningless comment. No need to respond further, except to address the point of the question.
