Looking for a mirrorless camera

Although I enjoy my Nikon d800 with various lenses it gets clumsy to travel with them. I'm looking for a good mirror-less camera with a interchangeable lens feature and built-in flash if possible. Being old school I prefer a viewfinder.

At the local camera store they offer a few models and the EVF's are nice enough and I can live with that. The small size is the big draw. Full frame has spoiled me but a cropped sensor is OK. Looking for something I can toss in my carry on when I travel by air.

Thanks in advance for any info.

The Sony A7 is full frame, mirrorless, & small. A new model, the A7II is due out in the near future. That means the A7 should come down in price. If you can live without some of the new features, get the A7.

I recently purchased a Sony a6000, but am still learning how to use the camera. I am very impressed with the camera but do not feel comfortable giving you a positive recommendation yet.

Fuji X cameras specialize in "old school"

Depending on your wants / needs...I'd say an X-T1 or an X-E2 would be great.

Personally, I don't need interchangeable lenses for a lot of what I shoot so I'm using an X100T.

Cost was a factor and I appreciate all the suggestions. I checked out the a3000 and will be trying that one out. I'm sure for the price it has some limits.

Thanks again.

Wait for the A7ii...it was just announce today. If that 5 axis is as good as olympus, they'll have a real winner there.

FF, 5-axis IBIS, what's not to like...other than the price.

Otherwise, take a look at the EM1. You can add the power grip or just the RRS BOEM-1 camera plate to slightly increase the size. The grip and all the customizable buttons are awesome...as are the new lenses coming out for it.

Another plug for the Fuji-X camera line. I normally shoot with a D800 but all I took to Europe this summer was the Fuji XE1 and the 18-55. I love old school and this one took me back to the days I had a Leica. Didn't regret my choice at all. The electronic eye level viewfinder did take some getting used to but it also doubles as a way to review your photos when it's too bright to look at the LCD.
Fuji makes great film so you can bet they know color. I use an older S5pro (Nikon D200 with Fuji sensor and processor) in the studio and just shoot jpeg- skin tones are amazing. They also made the Hasselblad X Pan for Hasselblad. That speaks to the build quality.

I have an X100s on the way to me right now.

Physically, we live in an actual 3 dimensions.

I would appreciate an explanation of why we need 5-axis IBIS ... why doesn't 3-axis suffice?

I'm amazed when I mound my 200mm SMC lens on my em1, and half squeeze to engage the IBIS...I really steadies it out.

most complaints center around the EVF - but hey, at least it HAS an evf - and it does work ! It does take a little getting used to. Still, it has a great sensor and all of Sony's great in camera functionalities.

I just bought and have been using a Sony a6000 as I'm testing the waters before I commit to switching from Canon DSLR's to Sony mirrorless systems. I just shot a job with both cameras (Sony a6000 & Canon 5D Mark III) to compare the image quality. I was quite surprised. The Sony a6000 held up incredibly well and even showed a little bit more dynamic range.

Honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with the Sony a6000. Small but incredibly powerful camera.

Like you I'm a Nikon guy, but with a love for the Fuji X-Series. As GoofyNewfy says you can't beat the X-E1 (cheap at present), the X-E2 or the X-T1 with the 18-55 f2.8-4 lens. APS-C sensor, picture quality that makes you drool, light in weight, such an easy-to-use menu system (check it against the Olympus menus !), terrific build quality of camera and lenses ..... and so small placed close beside your D800 !

For travel one of these three with the above lens may well be all you'll need. The low light performance is just phenomenal. If you want a bit of extra low light assistance, look at adding the 23mm or 35mm f1.4 lenses.

Happy for travel with one camera and a fixed lens ? Look at rpavich's X100s or the newly-launched X100T. Exactly the same picture quality etc as I mentioned above.

As ever I offer 3 pics for your benefit ..... first is the X-E1 with the 35mm lens, second is a night time shot of St Paul's Cathedral in London hand-held with X-E1 and 18-55 lens, and third is a very recent shot of crabs for sale in a local indoor market with my new X-T1 and 35mm lens.

X-E1 + 35mm f1.4, smell the leather !!
