The right time for these shots, sun up or sun set, is really short. The only way I can do it is have the camera all set up and ready to go with whatever preferred I want. In the morning, I am barely awake, usually blearly eyed and mess up what I need to set.
As I recall it, the shafts of light lasted for only a few minutes

I understand completely. When it's cold, it's easier to delay getting up.
I managed to force myself to get up early for a very pretty sunrise this morning. There were just enough clouds to make it interesting. You never know.
