We are going to Israel next fall. Is there a video camera that also takes quality still shots? What kind would be good to buy?
Thank you
Ohgod!
The next thing you'll be using a telephone to take pictures... will it ever end..............
Most of them do. My 12 year old Sony does, it will even insert them into video footage in the camera.
Pick a price range, what you want to record on, and have at the internet.
Since you say "we" are going, I would recommend that one of you carry a photo camera and one of you carry a video camera. As for "have at the internet", we all know you can't believe what you see on the internet - except here. :)
I personally don't have an interest in video yet, but when researching the D800, I saw a 5-minute video, "shot entirely with a D800" which was incredible until the titles at the end that listed a crew of at least 100 to make that 5-minute video.
General concensus from previous discussions on this is that HD video will only yield small (2 megabyte) images at slow shutter speeds (1/60). Some claim that the newer 4K video does much better, but I haven't tried it.
For me, if I was to use only one camera, I would go with a good DSLR for good video and excellent stills.

There are several cameras that shoot better video than the Camcorders. The Panasonic GH4 is the newest. Also the Sony RX-10 which I own, does unreal low light video. I used it to record nightclub shows on a cruise. Both cameras have outstanding image quality also.
My Canon 1dmk4 does great videos and stills. You can pick up a good used one for around $2500-3500

GoPro Hero 4 (not 3) for $499 shoots in 4K video, which is several times better than 1080p broadcast quality, and you can capture excellent 14MP stills from the video using their included software. It also only weights a couple ounces and can be worn instead of carried. You'll need their optional LCD rear screen which has a bigger battery than stock on it so you can see what you're shooting.
Go to Best Buy and watch the very long GoPro video on a large screen TV that sits atop the GoPro camera display and you'll be sold on the spot without talking to a single blue shirt. Do your research online too and you'll be double sold.

SR, welcome to the Hog. Look very seriously at the Canon 70d. It's one of only two dslr cameras that will actually auto-focus in video mode(the other is the newer Canon 7dll).
That is actually huge for amatuer video shooters.
And you can't shoot video and lift stills from it, as the video is shot at a very low resolution.
A 70d with 18-135(?) kit lens is about )$1300.
Make sure the lens is an STM lens. They have special low noise focus motors. With anything else, you will hear the motor in the video soundtrack.
Good luck and again, welcome. ;-)

Why not get a gh4 that excels at both.
