How Does Canon name the DSLR models?

I find myself confused over what the numbers of Canon's DSLRs indicate. Can anybody explain the rationale? Are the cameras with 1 digit number better than those with 2 or 3? Is a higher number better than a lower one?

My well-worn Rebel XTi has started to shoot only JPG when I have it set to shoot both JPG and RAW. I can't complain too much. I have probably shot many times the number of pics than the camera was built for, but it's time to go camera shopping!

Hawk, yes, in the single digits the smaller the number the better the camera.
Only the # 1 cameras are full bore pro cameras.
The 5, 6 and 7 are pro-sumer cameras.
#6 and smaller are Full Frame. Everything else is crop.
The two digit, xx are amature models with the bigger the better.
The Rebels are entry level cameras and the bigger the number the better.
A markll model (or lll or lV) a second generation of the model before it.

What makes it a little complicated is that in Europe/Japan the entry level numbers are different. ;-)

SS gave a good explanation, but you also want to look at the particular features because that's where it can also get confusing. For example, the 70D is a level lower then the 7D but is in many ways its equal or even superior, especially its focus system. The 7DII just replaced the 7D and for some uses it is being compared quite favorably to the 1DX at about one third the price. Another aspect is build quality. The xD's have overall better build features then the xxD's, which have better build features then the Rebels. How much YOU need for your usage should also be determined.

Budgie - have a look at the graphic at the bottom of this page for the hierarchy of the Canon lines and names ...

Interesting answer there below to this. But I have to ask do any camera brands numbering make any real sense? Some go up with numbers through time and others go down. Nikon may go with 1, 2, 3 digit numbers two in a sense but differently than Canon. Pentax (my brand) is totally strange on model names.
