What looks clear to your eye, may not be so clear to the camera. I usually figure the more stars I can see, the truly clearer the sky is and the more likely I'll get a good picture of the moon. A longer focal length will also help. I gave up using my 500mm f.6.3 mirror lens in favor of my Sony HX400 with a 50x optical zoom. At full zoom, it's the equivalent of a 1200mm focal length. You'll get a lot larger image size & have less worry about atmospheric & light pollution.
Thanks Nick , I try again tonight and this ball is almost red with a bunch of clouds around it!!! I noticed there is not much starts to look at , I will wait and see.
