As you can see, this two images are very soft .

Camera on tripod, VR OFF , manual focus ,remote shutter (Nikon) . Auto WB .

Is it me ( won't be surprise ) or the lens (70-300 Nikon VR )?

I try different aperture and ISO ,not too much change . Can you direct me ? Thanks

Don't forget that you are shooting through between 10 and 300 miles of atmosphere. And, if you are near any major sources of light, any particles in that atmosphere will reflect it. It's called light pollution.

You may not be making any mistakes. You may be waiting all your life for a perfectly clear night.

A zoom lens will never be as sharp as a prime lens.
My four suggestions:
1.) Use ISO 100 for less noise;
2.) Choose the aperture that provides the best resolution for your lens (usually 2-stops down from wide-open);
3.) Calculate shutter duration to provide proper moon exposure (now much shorter, will help eliminate movement);
4.) Shooting the moon at highest elevation has the advantage of least atmospheric distortion.
Exif info of image #1:
Camera Model: NIKON D7000
Image Date: 2014-11-07 22:36:30 (no TZ)
Focal Length: 300.0mm (35mm equivalent: 450mm)
Aperture: f/16.0
Exposure Time: 0.0025 s (1/400-sec)
ISO equiv: 400
Exposure Bias: -0.33 EV (unnecessary)
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Auto

If you want to sharpen it up, post processing works well.
