Just a thought.
The photo is really nicely done and I like the pelican. But I really like shot #2 the best. Here is why.
In shot #1 look at the horizon on the far beach in the background. It is not level. While this could be fixed in post, think about it in while holding the camera.
Second, I'm a background freak! That is why I really love #2 because it is all about the pelican---no distracting background. With a clean background #1 would be fantastic! Get a little lower, move a tad to the right and #1 would be a fantastic wall hanger. (plus you would eliminate the shadow on the left side of the bird).

Larry,
In the first photo, I would have to disagree since there are two planes of view, the beach and the pier. Since they both converge to the left I would leave them alone. I would have preferred a shallower depth of field, thus blurring the beach and hotel even further.
Now the second photo is great also, I like it but just a shade too dark. I would love to see the exif data on these photos.
The third photo, in my opinion, brings out the colors of the bird, but I would have corrected the red influence in post.
All of these shots are really nice, since I am someone that used to shoot underwater, and have thousands of fish, Octopus, and Shark photos I realize how exciting getting close to animals can be.

@cspear42: Your Pelican photos are great, especially the first 2 images. What happened with the third image, did you change your settings? If you use any type of photo editing software, you can bring down the "yellow" in the image; unless this was a deliberate capture. I didn't see that many Pelicans when I went to Florida, we were in the Orlando area & then saw the Seagulls & Pelicans at Daytona Beach. I just posted some Pelican shots to an area on here called "52 Week of 2012" ~ you'll find it under the photo gallery. There are a few threads going with different photos being posted. It's the tab next to the "Photography Forum". Love your UHH profile pic of the doggie - he/she is adorable.

To my eye, the only photo of these three that has accurate color is the 3rd, the "light" one. Blue sky, green water, and the yellow cast in the feathers is how the pelican actually looks. The first two pix are dark and have color casts, need to have WB and exposure corrected. IMHO, of course.

OK, first photos at beach. Nikon D5000, 18-200 Nikkor lens, ISO 200, Aperture setting, F 5.6, 1/1000. What do you think?
Lol! I get it! Actually, you can edit the text of your posts and even change the picture up to approximately 60 minutes after your initial post. Awesome photos! He/she really posed for you!

I like all 3. #1 & #2 are my favorites though.
Funny how ugly can be beautiful! great shots. You must have had a fish on a pole to persuade it to sit still that close.
More pelican shots, same place, different date, better results, I think. Day was cloudy, Aperture, ISO 200, using different focal settings from 18-200 Nikkor lens. Amazing how close I could get. I got lower, straightened horizon. I think improvement. What do you think?
2 days of great shots, does he want a portfolio for Hollywood?
@cspear42: These are really good ones! I like all of them. How funny that you should get the same capture that I did on my last trip to the Redondo Pier. It's your middle shot where he's looking straight at you with both eyes. I've got a shot just like that. I'll post mine with this message and you can see how close they look to each other. You'll get a chuckle too! :-)

Awesome photo. Funny how they look straight at you. Could not pass up the close up. Almost scary. Thank you for you comments.
Thanks cspear42! I'm actually thinking at some point of entering this one into the next digital print competition my club has every so often. What do you think? I know I'll be using it when I start making some greeting cards or getting them printed. In addition to me making framed prints to sell, I'm going to start adding "bookmarks" and "greeting cards" to my inventory. I got the idea of the bookmarks & greeting cards from another one of members from my camera club. I've been participating in art shows lately, but haven't sold anything. :( I keep trying though!

I concur with the others; good job.

Hi there! I think I'll have to look at my Pelican shots again that I took on my trips to the Redondo Pier. I love going down there & photographing all the different sea birds. I even have some really good close up shots of the seagulls. This one that I posted, I think I'll have to go back in & play around with the contrast or saturation sliders. I think he can use a little help with his "looks." What do you think?
