Pelican
Visiting my son & Granddaughter in Clearwater, FL and while visiting the beach took these photos of a very handsome Pelican. I got within 4 feet.
nice shots....
but this should be in the photo gallery section...
better hurry before "wolfie" see this..haha.
seriously, a lot of people don't understand this section of the forum and make the same mistake.
Nice.
Tack sharp and well exposed.
very nice.
Oops! I actually thought I was putting these in Photo Gallery. New to UHH and getting educated. Sorry for the mix-up.
OK, first photos at beach. Nikon D5000, 18-200 Nikkor lens, ISO 200, Aperture setting, F 5.6, 1/1000. What do you think?

?
ok, was trying to correct my screw up by asking a general question. Guess that doesn't do it for this section. Will try harder next time. Sorry. Just like my photos, not perfect.

don't say that; be proud of that first shot especially. I wish I had taken that.

No need to apologize... :)
for the record...these are great shots....the high shutter speed was the ticket here.
Good job and don't worry about the wrong posting. :)
@cspear42: Your Pelican photos are great, especially the first 2 images. What happened with the third image, did you change your settings? If you use any type of photo editing software, you can bring down the "yellow" in the image; unless this was a deliberate capture. I didn't see that many Pelicans when I went to Florida, we were in the Orlando area & then saw the Seagulls & Pelicans at Daytona Beach. I just posted some Pelican shots to an area on here called "52 Week of 2012" ~ you'll find it under the photo gallery. There are a few threads going with different photos being posted. It's the tab next to the "Photography Forum". Love your UHH profile pic of the doggie - he/she is adorable.
Thank you Shutterbug. I really appreciated your comments. I think I was messing around in PSP and somehow did something to bring out the yellow. Unfortunately I am colorblind towards the pastels and sometimes some things look really good to me. Just drives my wife crazy when I try to pick out colors. I need to learn to trust my auto corrects. Could not believe how many Pelicans were at Pier 60 and to get so close!! Just awesome.
I just posted some Pelican shots a few hrs ago on the Photo Gallery area called "52 Week of 2012". I have one where there are 3 Pelicans roosting on a rooftop, and another where I did a macro shot of his upper body & head. See if you can find that thread in the Photo Gallery area. Do you use Facebook?
Just a thought.
The photo is really nicely done and I like the pelican. But I really like shot #2 the best. Here is why.
In shot #1 look at the horizon on the far beach in the background. It is not level. While this could be fixed in post, think about it in while holding the camera.
Second, I'm a background freak! That is why I really love #2 because it is all about the pelican---no distracting background. With a clean background #1 would be fantastic! Get a little lower, move a tad to the right and #1 would be a fantastic wall hanger. (plus you would eliminate the shadow on the left side of the bird).
Larry
Thank you Larry. Wow, when I posted these photos I did not notice the uneven background; however, I did after the posting and knew I would take a hit. I usually straighten my shots but not in this one. I was so surprised that I actually got so close. Thank you for comments, I'm really a novice and I really appreciate constructive comments.
Other that straightening...love your 1st shot..second shot would like to see all of the beak??? 3rd too light?? great cathes for a novice!!! keep shooting!!!! and posting!
