I have been watching your posts and really enjoy the images and dialog tips. I am stepping out with Nikonian's encouragement to participate here, I typically post on closeups. I haven't been working with lighting like many of you are doing. I am a 6 mo veteran with this camera and lens so I have a lot to learn. I will tell you that I am really enjoying close-up photography, it opens up a new world to me. I am posting a few from today along the river from Mission San Jose, past Mission San Juan to Mission Espada. Excellent walk with an occasional bike rider and jogger.
Have not seen your earlier work. These are great, a couple of them a little light but very editable. I do like it them all. Do keep at, and post as you progress.
Thanks Lightcatcher. Can the lighting be adjusted with LR?

Oh yea great program. Downloaded the damsel, played with it a little while in LR. Your raw file would be a lot better to work with. Do shoot raw.
Does everyone post raw? I usually shoot raw but post with a jpg.

I don't. File size is too large. Welcome.
Full sun is great for maximum illumination, but images comes with harsh shadows. You will notice that most of us use speedlight illumination with a softbox. The typical field exposure at ISO 200 is 1/200-sec at f/16. Take a look at several different set-ups on pages 4 through 6:

Sorry if I got you going in a wrong direction about raw they are to large to upload on this and most sites. Shoot raw do your editing and post jpg. You can post png and they do have more info for fellow UHH'ers to play with if you want them to. Again sorry for the miss understanding of you and other UHH'ers.

Ok, this helps. Thanks. It is like fill light you need for people sometimes.

This may be a question of semantics, but you can adjust the exposure levels, for both shadow and highlight detail (I don't use LR)-- but the lighting is a condition that should be addressed during the capturing of the image file.
got it. I think I know how to take care of shadows in LR. The brush tool and exposure. Thanks for the tips.
I have terrible luck shooting in direct sunlight. I still try once in awhile because sometimes there's no choice. Macro is generally done using full flash method. Overcast days are good, in the shade is good. Personally I try to shade with my body or soft box however, this may spook your subject...slow movements help.
And Welcome! :-)

The best part about Macro (to me) is you don't have to travel far to find subjects. They can be right outside your door.
Great pictures, keep at it!
Flyextreme, I was doing the opposite, I thought high intensity sun was needed, thanks for the tip!
