Today's project.

Yep. I have some severely rotted fascia and soffit. I have been blowing it off for a couple of years now, but I had the day off and it was nice. Tomorrow, the weather is supposed to turn to crap. My wife did not have to tell me to get on this. I was plain sick of looking at the hole.

The problem is, that to do the repair properly, would include taking a 30 ft section of gutter loose. Replacing an 8ft, piece of soffit, and 2 pieces of fascia; one being 12ft. long, the other being 8ft. It was all built like crap to begin with naturally. To repair it properly would probably take me all of a day.

Well, I woke up at noon. A patch was in order. It turned out good.

After cutting out most of the rot.

You like that, huh? Actually, it must have been the slightly different angle that did all of the trimming. Lol.

I was in the metal & vinyl siding & soffit & guttering business for years. Your problem is pretty common, unfortunately. Good job on your repair.

The problem was caused by water running behind the gutter & entering (& eventually rotting) the fascia wood at the joint that's got to be there.

Get some aluminum sheet flashing material & run it back well into the shingle valley above the gutter & force all the water to run into the gutter, & it will last much longer this time.

Also, be sure gutter end cap is well sealed to the gutter, and the gutter is pitched to drain correctly.

It is funny that you mentioned all of that because those were the things I checked for and everything seemed to be in order. But the water sure got in there somehow. I am sure it has something to do with not enough flashing behind the valley. Oh, and it is a wood roof. This means I really need to check further. Thank you very much for the good advice. At least I know that I am on the right track.
