I have two. The first is the MeFOTO RoadTrip Travel Tripod Kit with Ballhead, which you can find at Adorama and other places. Here's a link:

I also have a very nifty TrekPod Go! Pro (http://www.trek-tech.com/products/trekpods.html) which serves as a combination walking stick, monopod, and by extension, a tripod. However, I noticed that it's a bit susceptible to winds, so it's not as sturdy as the MeFOTO

I too have a MeFoto, the Backpacker, and I love it for travel. I have a full frame camera, a Canon 5D mk3 and it hold this with just about any lens I put on it. I can't recommend it enough.

I've got a Manfrotto that has 4 leg sections. I think it's a 293 with a ball head. I use it with a Nikon D7000. It fits in my motorcycle hard bags, but I've never put it in a suitcase.

I just traveled with a most excellent lightweight tripod, but I had it in a case, not in the suitcase. It would fit in a suitcase if necessary. It is the Eddie from 3-Legged Thing:

I like the tripod a lot, it's stable and light, but I'm not a fan of the head. Really Right Stuff makes better heads.

My Eddie held my Nikon d810 with the heaviest lens I have, the 14-24mm, quite well, out in a desert with a slight wind.

I also have the Mephoto Roadtrip. It'll hold 17+ lbs and you can also use one of the legs as a monopod. Also fits in most carry on luggage with ease.

Hello ronjay, you may want to check out the Induro Carbon Fiber CGT214 tripod. You pay for what you get. Quality tripod. Good luck in your search! Mike J.

I have the smaller, backpacker version, which folds to around 12". I'm satisfied with it.

Don't go too light. A heavier tripod is more stable and less likely to tip over or be knocked over. My friend Bob, had his blow over last week and broke the articulating LCD off his camera. $200 to repair.

I'll add my vote to the MeFoto crowd, but state that that tripod is simply better than hand held. It does tend to be a bit on the "wiggly" side. But, as I said, I'd take that if I had no other choice. I'd also recommend, strongly, that one use a remote shutter release, as well.

Daddy, any lightweight pod should be weighted to avoid vibration and/tipping over if there is a good breeze. It's easy to use a camera bag or pack.
No need for a pod to ever fall over. ;-)
