Great narrative and pictures of a magnificent old warrior. A typical 7 man crew consisted of:
1. Pilot, who sat on the left side of the cockpit.
2. Flight Engineer, who sat on the right side of the pilot. There was no Co-Pilot, typical of foreign WW II aircraft design.
3. Navigator
4. Bomb Aimer
5. Wireless operator
6. Mid-Upper Gunner
7. Rear Gunner

Those 4 Rolls Royce Merlins at power must have made beautiful, beautiful music.

ENJOY !!

Former history teacher here. I always thought the lack of a co-pilot was because of a shortage of trained pilots in relation to the numbers of planes needed/built. The engineer was often someone who had nearly completed flight school but for some reason was not certified as a pilot. (like eye sight etc.)

Great pictures, but can't agree about the engines making beautiful music. When I was flying Lancasters (which had been modified for Coastal Command operations, and were rebadged as Shackletons) the sound of the engines towards the end of a 20+ hour flight was anything but musical! (On reflection, better than no engine noise at all, I guess!)

They Did!!!!!! I was fortunate enough to be under the flightpath of these two Lancs on their way to pay their tribute to the Canadian aircrews of WW2. I also visited RAF East Kirkby, (where Lanc. "Just Jane" does taxi-runs), I also see the BoB Lanc from time to time. Along with the Spits at RAF Duxford, and the converted P51's, (converted to Merlin engines - (built by Packard I believe!), the Merlins were indeed a lovely sound!

ENJOY !!

I am fortunate enough to live a short distance away from the Hamilton Warplane Heritage museum where Vera is stationed. They fly her on a regular basis taking people up for rides.
Those engines are unmistakable when she is in the air.

The plane will be in the air on Remembrance day Nov 11th as it is always.

It is a wonderful piece of history which has been maintained and we are fortunate to have it locally to see.

Thanks for posting you story.

Frum, I don't know a lot about those old planes, but I do know a guy who used to fly them.
I've been meaning to get him to do a photo shoot as he's in his nineties. He used to fly B-24's till he was shot down over Germany. His name is Bruce Sooy. He's quite an old character! ;-)
