What exactly do you need a back up for? Is it just in case you have to send your D-7100 in for service, or are you shooting events where you need at least 2 of everything?

If it is just because you "may" have to send it in for repairs and don't want to be without a camera, I'd probably go with the D-5100.

I do events, so I have the D-200 as a back up to my D-7000. I also have a D-70 and a D-5100 that I'm basically letting other people use. The ONLY reason I'm using the D-200 as the back up is because I know those controls backwards and forwards like I know my D-7000. the D-5100 is an issue for me, because all of the settings are burried in the menu. Much slower for me, and when shooting events and weddings, I can't stop to try to figure out how to change something.

If you know one or the other camera so well that you can put it under a blanket, and change settings just by feel. That's the one you want for a back up.

After I got my D-7000, it was used as my back up for a while until I was as comfortable with the controls as I was with the D-200.
