Good information. Thank you.

Dave for what its worth, I'm a Nikon clicker, I bought the SX50 mostly for my wife, she doesn't like to bend down much, Something about me coming out with an engine hoist to get her up, kind of didn't go over well. She loves it as most the own on does.

I have found that the view finder, is almost useless to focus with, you have to rely on the AF. It's really quite good on stabilization. You can hand hold it at almost any length. I like to keep it against my eye and use the view finder to help steady it. I'd buy another if she lost this one. She would make me.

And as you know with that small sensor it's drops off quickly in dimming light conditions. ISO above 400 gets kind of noisy. Making the manual pop up flash almost a requirement which is good for about 16 feet.

Yes you can get steady pictures at large zoom. Here is one I took about a
month ago of the moon with my SX 50 handheld on about 125X . I do this
all the time.

If it works like the 50 your wife will love it. I sold my D5 Mart II and all my heavy pro lens and this 50 replaces everything without a problem. Linda knows this camera inside out and has gotten some outstanding pictures. I shoot the eagles from across the two lane road and river way on the other side and get some remarkable shots. Get the adaptor ring off ebay much cheaper than Canon also I go a good UV filter off ebay. Didn't like the Canon UV. Here are some pictures from the 50 and will be getting the 60 soon.

I honestly can't say enough good things about this camera. I bought one about 18 months ago and shortly after that my wife stole it from me. She is never shot anything except an iPhone before the SX 50.

Like every camera has its drawbacks, the EVF and manual focus are mediocre at best but with practice both are usable. My wife uses the EVF all the time, but it takes practice

I think the most important thing about the camera is its reach.

I shoot with Nikon 300 mm lens. But, the SX 50 can reach out and touch things that look like a speck even when I'm out 300 mm.

In effect what this does is open up a whole new world of subject matter.

I can't tell you the number of times I'm sitting in the car eating cheese sticks while she is shooting birds or wildlife that I can barely make out with my Nikon.

If you're interested in the camera, take a look at this link. This is sleepydrdr's site NatGeo "Your Shot" She has about 150 shots there that will give you a good idea of the little cameras capabilities. 99% taken with an sx50.

Check out my pictures posted above, they are all taken with the 2X because of camera shake and hate to use a tripod. I am 82 so not as steady as I use to be. I had that problem until Linda got me started on the 2X setting. So don't give up.

I would like to hear from people that have experience with the Canon SX-50. I am considering purchasing a SX-60 simply for a backup and so I can learn a little about the Canon system. I am not jumping the Nikon ship. It appears to be a fun camera and it appears to be quite good and I don't have to get involved with a bunch of glass. Also, does anyone know when the SX-60 will be shipping?

Like Linda, I have had my SX-50 for about a year. My main purpose was to have an 'all in one' carry camera instead of hauling a ton of lenses, and other equipment. I'm deeply retired and find it suits my needs. In fact, since getting the SX-50, I have only used my DSLR system once, and that was to see if it was still working. The SX is a tremendous and fun camera that delivers very satisfactory results. I'll bet the '60' will be even more fascinating!

There is an in-camera teleconverter + a digital zoom. The in-camera teleconverter seems to have slightly better results. It offers 1.5x and 2x, in certain modes: P, M, Av, Tv.

I believe what I encouraged Bee to try was the burst mode. SCN mode at top, fnc button on back, scroll to HQ burst. I use that often for long distant birds and critters.

I no longer use the 1.5x and rarely ever used the 2x. Never use the digital zoom. Mostly have found that optical zoom + cropping in pp gives best result.

I think it's the burst mode we were using last time out. I only used the 2x and 1.5x in first few months I had the camera. Those digital reaches make it even harder to hold the camera steady for focus and clarity.

However the 2x sets a faster shutter speed there by reducing shake. Anyway I have better luck with it.

Don't know if the diameter of the lens is the same as the SX-50, but if so, I bought an inexpensive adapter for a 50 mm circular polarizer that I already had, it just screws right on. I keep the filter on the converter ring permanently and when I want it, I just attach the converter ring-CP combination. Sorry for the lack of details, but it cost less than $10 on Amazon. No problems with lens distortion or vignetting.
