Please can some give me a simple way to take a photo in LR and export it to a file on my desktop but smaller? Sounds like an easy thing doesn't it? Hummmm

really good question.. In LR under export there are to controls/choices on the export panel:
a Slide bar - to adjust quality
a check box - to limit size to 100k
think that will work...must admit have not tried it yet.
I usually save out the large file then Resize the Jpg.
I am assuming you are working with RAW files (prolly makes no difference). Have a nice day :)

I send files to my desktop from LR via Photoshop where I resize to my liking and "save as" to my desktop.

The Lightroom export lets you specify the maximums size of the file, or the pixels of the maximum dimension (useful if you want a 500px picture for a web page). Very simple. Just keep scrolling down thru the export window to see all of these choices.

I think there are two kinds of "smaller". If I understand it right, the "resize" in PS will change the dimensions in actual pixels. It can truly be a "smaller" picture. For example, my primary camera records a photo at 4592x3498. I can "resize" to 1920x1080, or what ever I want. As you change the dimensions in the resize menus screens, PS estimates the size in MB of your new file.
When you then Save a file and select JPEG you get the option of setting the compression. Other formats don't give you this option. The jpeg selection brings up the screen that lets you set the "quality" a couple different ways.
Lightroom gives you similar options in the Export screen selections but in fewer steps. You can change pixel dimensions and jpeg quality at the same time. On the same screen you pick Image Format: JPEG and the quality slider pops up to the right. Below, you can check Resize to Fit and make selections in pixel size.

:) that works... I did mean 2 controls (not to controls).
anyways... we should both be able to do this on the export screen. (did you ever just have one of those days?). Were gonna be so much better at this tomorrow.

Yes. Warning - the decision to have it export a maximum size doesn't always turn out right for me.
I typically choose the option Resize to Fit "longest side" - if it's for UHH I use 1200 pixels, if it's for email or Facebook usually 800 pixels, if it's for some purpose like a commercial print service or something, I use the measurements specified by whoever I'm sending it too.

Export/Image Sizing/Resize to Fit/Long Edge then select the pixels (or inches, sometimes if you're exporting for sending to a printer) and resolution.

In the export dialog (right click on an image to get to it), you can select every possible parameter, including file name, file type, location, size, quality, watermark etc. This will perform any downsampling necessary and still maintain decent quality. If you find that you will use these settings more than once, you can save the settings as a named preset. You can also crop your image in the develop module to get a smaller pixel dimension.

If image quality is not important, email the photo to yourself, copy it, depending upon your computer and your email program, you should be able to copy, save as, and move it to your desktop as a background image, that is, if this is what you are asking about how to do ?
