I'm thinking of taking the plunge and buying this lens. It's the newer one - the 2.8L IS II.
Does anyone have any opinions on it?
Thanks
I own this medium telephoto and it's one of the finest lenses Canon makes. It's very sharp with great color and contrast. I should have owned it a long time ago.
The F2.8 is perfect for low light conditions and built like a tank. I'd highly recommend this lens. Remember this lens isn't a lightweight and might take some time to get use to.
One of the best "L" lens Canon ( or anyone else) makes.
It is no lightweight but the sharpness and clarity are superb.
It is the sharpest zoom lens made within it's focal range ! It is also, the most expensive( I believe) and also the heaviest ( I believe). IMHO, the only way to justify the expense and weight is to put a Tamron SP 2X behind it - so it can be used as 140-400 f5.6 in addition to 70-200 f2.8 ! Of course, it will work good/better in lower light situations at 70-200. I will also provide a slightly shallower DOF (over the F4 versions)if that is important to you. With the 2X, you will want to be at least on a monopod for stability and ergonomics.
It's superb! I love mine and agree with the other comments posted as well. Buy one! :) :)

Buck, it IS one of the best lenses in existence.
If you need the 2.8, then nothing else will do.
If not, the less expensive 70-200's will be unnoticeably as good.
Even if you just want it cause it's a cool lens, that's ok as we'll!

I get shots with it on my 1DX that are breathtaking... Clarity, contrast, color rendition are superb. Its carat weight is massive too! :D

The Sony G 70-200 f2.8 Mkii actually lists for $500 more! I used it on my A99 when I had that rig, but is much prefer the Canon glass on the Canon bodies. The Canon renders beautiful images.
Top pick a beautiful lens. If money is an issue or you want a lighter lens dont discount the F4 yet again another excellent lens.

My 70-200 is the best lens my bag and the most versatile. You will never regret purchasing the 70-200.I love and cannot live without mine.
I love my Tamron 70- 200 and the $1,000+ I saved and it is rated with the Canon or in some cases sharper.
My 20 year old 70-200 2.8L is still, still my favorite go to and walking around lens!! Sometimes I do wonder if I should get the newer version...
