Is there really one better than the other? If so, why?

This gets debated here twice a week MINIMUM with no objective answers. Could I ask you to please go up to the SEARCH menu pick at the top of the page and type in Nikon vs Canon or Canon vs Nikon and see the thousands of posts that add bulk and volume, but little clarity and evidence, to the issue.

Thanks.

Beth, welcome to the Hog.
Yes, there is a clear cut answer, just that, THAT answer is not so clear cut.
To get a good handle on it, it needs to be looked at historically, and not the here and now. But everybody wants to look at it in the here and now. That's what makes it not so clear.
And, realistically, for the average shooter, even a Sony will actually work( )!
But if you REALLY need to know, it's Canon.

The level of the camera matters much more than the brand. For example, the D610 and 6D (consumer level full frame cameras) are very similar, and both are quite different from the D5300 and T5i, the mid-consumer level crop sensor cameras.

The responses on these topics by SharpShooter are very entertaining, but we're pretty sure he's auditioning to work for Canon. :-D

Well believe it or not I joined this list after following a browser that said it would answer that question :) No I suppose I really don't need to know and I guess it really doesn't matter...since I have what I have....however I wondered what the general consensus was on the 2 :) Didn't know it had been discussed ad nauseaum since I am new :) In the future after I get better and richer LOLOLOL I would like to purchase a higher end camera...at present I am working with Nikon 5100 55-200mm lenses...I found a 55-300mm lens very inexpensive on Ebay and excited to try out the new range!!!

Nevertheless...here is 3 photos I took earlier today :) Not to bad...IMO...you can even see the raindrops hitting her head :) I long for better zoom...which I suppose alot of people do...

CC4 always welcome...learning appreciated

Beth, don't be afraid to reinvent your own wheel and ask questions, just because they have already been asked.
In our quest for photographic knowledge, or indeed even just opinions is a curve we have all been through.
And just as you are new and asking, there are plenty that are new and ready to answer. For those tired of seeing a question asked over and over, they are not obligated to participate and can just move on.
What is NOT their right, is to tell you not to ask.
Beth, again welcome to the Hog, and, ask away!! :-)

SS, I never understood that either. People complain every time a question is asked by another member that already has been asked. Other than that, we all know Pentax is #1 :)

Rac, I grew up on Pentax. And even though Nikon was the biggie then, for me, Pentax WAS #1!
Even though I wanted a Nikon in 08, I never got one and will always be more fond of Pentax than #2!
