Been following das1997's topic, First Canon DSLR with great interest. However, it did bring to mind an even more basis question. Of the 4 components of making a picture, which is the most important component of the process?
1. Quality lens
2. Quality camera body
3. Post processing software
4. The eye, and support material, behind the view finder.
Without no. 4, none of the above apply. Everything else is just an accessory.

I think this is a trick question.
With a DSLR, if you remove any one of those components, you have nothing, nada, zilch!
I'm gonna have to go with the camera.
Followed by the lens.
It's a given that it has an operator, no matter how good or how bad.
I'm not talking about the shots you can get with an instamatic, like landscape. I'm talking about the most difficult shots ever produced by pros!!
Photography, is relative. ;-)

4, 1, 2, 3. In that order.
4 by a long shot. I love the photo challenges where they send out pros with the cheapest gear possible, the equivalent of using a Snoopy reel when fishing for a Great White Shark. Some of the results are downright amazing. I'm not against great equipment and I'm a computer guy that loves to dabble in PP, but a great shot takes a lot of skill and experience on the part of the photographer. My 2 cents... (Oh, and don't forget patience, perseverance, planning and a little bit of luck...)

I think they all should be of comparable quality for the most effective results. If any are not, they should be upgraded to match the others.
For a "weak" ranking, I would go 4, 2, 1, 3, mainly to put the camera ahead of the lens.

Some of the results of a person who doesn't know anything about photography but has a really good camera are also downright amazing. :-)

It varies, and we each have a unique set of circumstances.
But... for each and every one of us, if we can determine which item listed has the
least positive influence on our photography,
that is the one that is best to improve to get better photography.
