I can do the same, Ron.....However.....If I waited until I could get that close to these guys with the Nikon, the shots would never happen. Advantage SX50. One can take the shot without spooking one's subject. Image quality may suffer a bit, but at least you got the shot. Or mebbe, next time you're in Fla, you could look me up and demonstrate your technique for sneaking up on them.?????

Then you are after telephoto shots, not close-ups...I use my 55-300 or my 150-500 for those... :-D
Seems you have a lens issue, not a camera one...get a tele zoom and you'll get some great shots with your 7100...

Nice shots, Jimjay, but I would like to expand a little on Ron's comments. I, too, use a D7100 & an SX50. I also use my Nikon 55-300mm on a regular basis, mainly for birds. However, the 55-300mm, although it takes really sharp bird shots, is not a close up lens. I use my SX50 equally as much, mainly for the 'long' shots.

Whether a DSLR takes good close ups has absolutely nothing to do with the camera--it has all to do with the lens. Put a close focusing lens on your D7100, & you will take sharper close ups than you can with your SX50. Enjoy both--they are both great cameras. Earl. :-)

I think Jimjay and I are talking different definitions of what a close up is...
This duck shot was taken at about 75 meters away with a telephoto lens but I would not cal it a close-up...
The second pic was shot with my camera about 18 inches away and is what I would call a close-up...
This is why cameras have a close-up Mode in their programme, so you can get the lens closer to the subject... :-D

DOOK and SX2002......My Nikon wears its 55-300 zoom lens most of the time. I use the SX50 when I need more (or less) zoom. Yes, the SX50 is also a good closeup camera. But I prefer to use the the D7100 when I can because image quality is better. All I was saying is that image quality on the posted shots is not the best. Download them and zoom in on the download to see what I'm talking about. I've never been able to get good sharp shots on the download with the SX50.

Here is a closeup with the SX50, Ron. About 6 inches from the teddy bear's nose. Download and zoom in on the image, and you will see what I'm talking about. Compare the download with your currency shot.

Not sure what you are getting at...the money shot was taken at a much greater distance and hence a wider view to get it all in...
And yes, the teddies nose is a real close up...and yes, I did notice the money shot is much sharper and clearer...

Very old bank note been sitting in a museum for many years, not sure what the real colour is never having seen a new one...

This pic is pretty good, Jimjay--you have to compare apples with apples. Bear in mind, Ron's camera & lens costs 6 times more than your SX50, so one would expect his image to be a little sharper. :-)

Nice shots with your SX50. I had a SX50 which I regret selling. They are amazing.
