Maybe to get where they are going, on a route recognized for decades, flown by non-military aircraft, at an altitude of over 30,000 feet?
While military aircraft have been shot down in this region, civilian aircraft are usually considered to be non-combatants, and off limits, especially when no other reason for shooting them down than terrorism is possible.

IMO airlines should rethink their flight plans to avoid any volitile areas.

And what area, in today's world, isn't volatile?

That aside, competition is tight in this arena (commercial flight), it happens so seldom, that any airline that did that would lose on time and cost. Not a viable alternative.

Much better would be for the leader of the world's most powerful country (the US) to make a very strong call for action to find who did it, and swift drastic punishment.
Instead of the lukewarm pablum Obama has put out.

Well, civilian airliners fly over areas like Detroit, Mich., Washington, DC and New Orleans, Louisiana, don't they?
Any unrest there that you are aware of?
(Oh, Lordy, does that make me a racist?)
