Do I need to take a flash????

Hi All
Going to Rome, Venice and then a week in Tuscany. I want to travel pretty light but am thinking that some evening shots in Rome or Venice might be in order. As far as lens go just taking my 24-105 f4 and a 50mm f1.8.
What are your thoughts for taking along the flash?

Personally, I won't go without my speedlight! I use it for fill quite often in bright daylight ; really adds so much more than on camera flash....that is just my opinion. As for night shots, I would use a tri -pod and long exposure, without flash.

Leave the 50 and take a flash.

I think you will be ok without one. You will not be able to light up much past 25' with a flash. With most cameras of today you can up the ISO so you can almost take pictures in the dark. If you used a lot of fill flash with your style of shooting you would not ask the question. = Dave

If traveling light is a priority then you always have the camera pop up flash in a pinch. That's what it's for.
Of course a speed light alone is not that much more stuff. But will you have time to set it up? Maybe a collapsable tripod is a better choice for night cityscapes if space is a premium.

take the flash, and plenty of batteries. I rarely use a flash but I hate not having one with me for those times I really want one.

If you are taking your flash on the trip but don't have much experience using it, practice now - before the trip!
The same is certainly true when bringing a new camera on a trip. It's smart to become thoroughly familiar with any camera equipment and photography techniques beforehand rather than fumbling around on the trip, trying to figure out how to make it work and missing excellent shots in the process. You want to keep both frustration and disappointment to a minimum while on vacation by being prepared.

Take it all. I'm going to London and Paris later this month and my two carry-ons will be loaded with equipment and my suitcase will have my tripod and monopod. If you are an early riser you can get some great shots in St. Marks plaza. You might even get some great low light shots. Have fun.

With no built-in flash, I would definitely take a speedlight.

Happy, we all travel differently, and we all shoot differently.
I've never been to Italy, but in my experience, museums and most churches don't allow flash, but they DO allow fast lenses.
When I shoot on the streets after dark, the best shots for me are available light, not flash. Maybe to get a shot of your wife in front of a fountain. I Always take and carry a flash, but very rarely use it. If I didn't take it, I would not miss it.
I ALWAYS take a 50mm 1.4, and use it a lot, and consider 2.8 too slow. But I also take a travel-pod for night shots. My daily backpack weighs between 15-20 pounds, but after a few days I don't notice it, even on long days.
That's how I do it. You need to accommodate your own style. Have a great trip! :thumbup:

happy sailor, We went a few years ago, and if I recall we were not allowed to use flash in the churches and museums, which were dark in some areas. You may want to check this dated link, but I would do a Google search as well as check with your travel agent. Enjoy your trip. I spent 15 days in Italy 2 years ago and I never used the 70-300 lens that I had brought, the 24-105 was on my camera the whole time. I took some night shots of the Grand Canal by bracing myself against a wall. I did not take a tripod or flash with me. I was surprised though that the greater majority of the churches (with the exception of St. Peter's) did not allow ANY photography. That had not been the case when we were there in 2005.

What will you be using the flash for and how often do you think? If not much then will the 1.8 suffice? Do you have room to take it in your carry on? Indoors in most buildings in Rome you will not be able to use flash or your camera for that matter. Same with tripods. Monopods are sometimes acceptable in places they allow cameras but no flash. Check online for the places you are going to see and see if cameras and accessories are allowed.
