This is a spey fly I tied last night. I call it the Midnight Spey because of the black dubbing I used for the body.

Nice photo! Just curious what kind of feathers you use for tying?

It depends on what I'm tying, but I'd say they are an expensive investment. I have over $1000 worth of furs and feathers at my tying bench. Someday I'll post a pic of my tying area which shows the boxes of stuff I have.

I herd the use of feathers in the fashion industry is driving up the price of hackle. Have you noticed this?

The prices have gone up some, but the suppliers are trying to keep the prices in check. The real problem is trying to find good quality hackles. The store shelves are about empty. The hair/feather craze isn't supposed to last much longer, so we should see more availability soon.

I guess I could say that most of my feathers are chicken, duck, turkey, phesant, peacock and ostrich.

Great flys and pics! I used to tie back in the day... but thats another story. Do you know if you have anybody in your area that has fighting chickens. Some places still allow them. The good hackles came from Mexico when I was tying. We had friends who had regular barn chickens and roosters, but the feathers weren't good for tying. Something in the genes of the fighting ones made them good for tying, at least thats what I was told.

Thanks.

I don't know of anyone who has fighting cocks. Don't even know if it's legal or not.

Most of the feathers I use are from the US. There are a few suppliers who deal only in feathers for fly tying. They breed their chickens for the sole purpose of fly tying. Whiting is one of them. Keough is another. Not sure where they are located, but they are in the US somewhere. I think, Oregon and Michigan but don't quote me.

Nice photo. I'm not a fly tyer, but I do find them interesting to look at. Now I see they can make interesting subjects for photography also.
