When using the clone stamp or content aware tools, I also like to use navigator. Go to window, click navigator. This will give you a window that you can use to zoom in on any part of the picture to work on it. To move around in the picture, press the space bar and move you window.

I'm glad you liked my edit. I use Photoshop Elements 9 which has a great tool called "Content Aware". You select a brush and paint over whatever you want to remove. I also used a little bit of "Clone Stamp" to fill in what Content aware didn't fix.. I often check out YouTube for videos when I want to learn new tricks on Elements. Doug

"A few minutes"? I'm truly humbled! I played with CS5 until 1:15 a.m., but mine still looks ummm, crummy. So much to learn. Thanks for the inspiration!

I was about to suggest the same thing in Photoshop CS 5.5.
Reminds me of my best friend that passed away last year.....great shot
Yes, getting rid of the grass does take time :-). Can't seem to get the dog hair texture right.

Nice job...especially on the right nostril and left eye, since they are obscured by the reed in the original.

Yay!! I did it in CS5. I had a lot to learn about layers, but here it is. The only thing I could figure out how to do was to add that little bit of sparkle to her right eye.
Changed the pic to jpg instead of photoshop - my apologies.

Dog JPG format
Got some "floating" weeds in that one (in the water on the top) and the right eye looks kinda like what I got.

You need to order Scott Kelby's - Professional Portrait Retouching Techniques - It will help you a lot in various situations.

MNtnMan - I gave a tweak on the background and as to the eye, it looks okay to me. Maybe its my eyesight :-) .

When I studied your photo of the dog - my initial impression was that one of the blades of grass was running up through his nose!! Yuck - I thought if I could remove that one blade of grass - all the way up - then the photo would be improved.
I have CS5 but don't use it - too hard for my lazy brain. I use Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 by Corel. In the Express Lab mode I clicked on the Clone Brush and zoomed in at the base of that one blade of grass.
Working from where it crossed another blade of grass - moving upward I tried to eliminate the blade of grass by overwriting the blade. The grass is is going every which way and all confusing so it was easy to "blot out" that one blade of grass. As I got closer to his mouth I covered the blade with water.
The blade went up right through his nose and so I zoomed into the pixel level and "traded" the green grass pixels for black one's on his nose. Above his head I traded water for the blade of grass and then got another cup of coffee.
It's taken me much more time to write this up then it did to edit the photo. I think it's better - what do you think?
p.s. This is my first post. It was a fun exercise - thanks.

nice!!! and you cooled off the color!
Team, Photoshop in MY opinion :-) is one fantastic software - as I said I like and yes at time it is wee bit time hug but I have been using for a long time and I guess I just got used to it. I have CS5. Plug ins: Topaz and a few others. I do all my work in RAW and 90% of touch up in Bridge. Bottom line whatever works for you, like Niki says - Go for It! Editing the dog took about under 5 min.
My utmost respect to you folks on line - very professional and appreciate you sharing your experience in photo dealings - Thank you all.

It's almost 1am CST and here i am listening to Pandora and playing with Photoshop :-) it this what retirement does to us? Of course not... we have more time to do stuff and not worry getting up going to work and be late :-) Its all our time now :-)

Good job!
The eye is tough because it is obscured in the original. DougAlcona (p. 1) somehow rebuilt it.
The eye on mine looked like yours plus I messed up the nose.
:-(
