As I recall when the D4S came out a lot of comment - including on this site - was basically why upgrade. Then a few people get to use the thing and start to point out the advantages it has, and this is followed by a swing in opinion and a lot of upgrades.
I suspect the D810 will follow the same path.
I think you're right on that

An extra $500. Looking at the comparison specs I certainly would not upgrade if I had the 800. If I were to buy new, it would be a hard decision. Many of the upgrades are in video mode, which I rarely use.
No matter, I have too much invested in Canon lenses. When is Canon coming out with the 5D Mk4?

I wouldn't expect the D820 until 2016, along with the D5.
Nikon typically tries to keep a product viable for 2 years before replacing it. The D600 was replaced early because of the spot issue. In most other cases, they have been pretty close to the 2 year timeline which gives them time to recover money spent on design and development. (even though many of the advances will become available in future releases of other cameras above and below that product.

So Nikon just announced the new D810 with an expeed 4 processor, expanded ISO range (32 - 51,200), 5 fps shooting, no olp filter, & higher resolution screen. How many of you are going to order it as a replacement for your 800/800e or upgrade from what you are shooting now?
Might consider it if I have a rich relative die and leave me some money!!

I wasn't interested in the D800, so the D810 is not a temptation for me. My D610 is fine. One thing I don't like about the D800 is the CF card. I can use SD cards in everything except my infrared D70. I don't want to have to start upgrading and accumulating two kinds of cards.
not me, as my D800 works just fine for me.........!!
Would love to have one but I never buy the latest model. I buy the second oldest model and use the savings on lenses and other photography toys.
I wouldn't rush into this. Remember the issues with the D800 when it first came out and the problems with the D610. Give it a couple of months to shake out. It is a complex piece of hardware.

That was the first new feature I looked for; twin SD cards. No.

While the enhancements look good, I don't think that I need them at this time. I'll wait 2 years to see what the next generation of upgrades bring.

I'm poor, but won't talk people out of it. After all, when I do upgrade, it is usually a used or refurbished body, so the more that are out there, the lower the prices will be if/when I actually do need a new body.
EVERYONE with GAS, run out and buy as much as you can. I may need something, sometime.

I'm not too picky on who (relative, or stranger) dies, so if anyone wants to die and leave me money....well...if you insist. (but I probably won't spend it on a D810 unless you want me to)
I just bought the 800e about one month ago I will be learning this body
for quite awhile. It is a beautiful body. Years before I can think about upgrading.

I see not need to upgrade my 800E. In fact, this is an 800E as it has no antialiasing filter. The other small changes are not worth the money to my. I am saving for the reported upcoming Fuji full frame X-series camera for a lightweight travel camera.
